Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prepare a wide variety of metal surfaces for painting by sandblasting, pressure washing, scraping, sanding, and degreasing to ensure proper coating adhesion.
  • Perform detailed masking and taping of components and surfaces that are not to be painted, ensuring clean lines and protection of sensitive parts.
  • Operate conventional, HVLP, and airless spray equipment to apply primers, base coats, and topcoats to large and complex equipment.
  • Mix paints, primers, and specialized industrial coatings (epoxies, polyurethanes) to exact color specifications and required viscosity.
  • Perform minor bodywork on equipment, including filling dents, repairing cracks, and smoothing imperfections using body fillers and glazing putty.
  • Apply decals, stencils, and other branding elements to finished equipment with a high degree of precision and accuracy.
  • Conduct thorough quality inspections on finished work, identifying and correcting any defects such as runs, sags, orange peel, or insufficient coverage.
  • Disassemble and reassemble equipment components as necessary to facilitate a complete and high-quality paint application in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Read and interpret work orders, technical drawings, and paint specifications to understand project requirements and material needs.
  • Utilize various hand, pneumatic, and power tools for sanding, grinding, and polishing surfaces both before and after paint application.
  • Apply multi-stage coating systems, including zinc-rich primers, intermediate coats, and durable topcoats for maximum corrosion protection.
  • Ensure proper film thickness of applied coatings using wet and dry film gauges to meet manufacturer and customer standards.
  • Perform final touch-ups and detailing on painted units before they are released for final assembly or delivery to the customer.
  • Prepare and paint small parts and subassemblies in a controlled booth environment, ensuring a consistent finish with larger components.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all painting equipment, including spray guns, pumps, hoses, and paint booths.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the paint shop, mixing room, and prep areas to prevent contamination and hazards.
  • Manage and track inventory of paints, solvents, abrasives, and other supplies, communicating with the supervisor for reordering.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and environmental regulations, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like respirators and suits.
  • Safely handle, label, and dispose of hazardous materials and waste products according to established environmental and safety protocols.
  • Operate forklifts and overhead cranes to safely move heavy equipment and large components into and out of the prep and paint booths.
  • Collaborate with welders, fabricators, and mechanics to coordinate project workflow and ensure equipment is ready for the paint stage on schedule.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in operating various spray systems (HVLP, conventional, airless).
  • Advanced knowledge of paint mixing systems and color matching techniques.
  • Expertise in surface preparation methods, including sandblasting, chemical washing, and mechanical sanding.
  • Ability to perform minor auto body repairs, including the application and shaping of fillers (Bondo).
  • Experience applying a range of industrial coatings such as epoxies, enamels, and polyurethanes.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting work orders, blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Competence in using quality control tools like wet/dry film thickness gauges.
  • Safe operation of forklifts and overhead cranes for material handling.
  • Knowledge of proper maintenance and troubleshooting for spray guns and paint booth equipment.
  • Understanding of hazardous material handling and OSHA/EPA safety regulations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate from a vocational or technical college in Auto Body Repair, Collision Repair Technology, or Industrial Coating Application.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of experience in an industrial, automotive, or heavy equipment painting environment.

Preferred: Direct experience painting heavy construction, mining, or agricultural equipment is highly desirable. Experience with multi-stage paint systems is a significant plus.
