Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive, bottom-up fundamental analysis on a designated portfolio of public companies within a specific industry or sector.
  • Develop, maintain, and rigorously update complex, three-statement financial models to forecast earnings, cash flows, and key operating metrics.
  • Perform intricate valuation analysis using a variety of methodologies, including Discounted Cash Flow (DCF), Comparable Company Analysis, Precedent Transactions, and Sum-of-the-Parts (SOTP).
  • Formulate and articulate clear, concise, and high-conviction investment recommendations (Buy, Sell, Hold) supported by robust evidence and deep due diligence.
  • Author and publish compelling, in-depth investment research reports, including initiation of coverage, quarterly earnings updates, and thematic industry analyses.
  • Present investment theses and research findings persuasively to Portfolio Managers and the Investment Committee, confidently defending your assumptions and conclusions under scrutiny.
  • Proactively monitor and analyze industry trends, competitive landscapes, regulatory changes, and macroeconomic factors that could impact covered companies.
  • Build and cultivate a network of industry contacts, including company management teams, sell-side analysts, and subject matter experts, to gather proprietary insights.
  • Analyze and interpret SEC filings (10-Ks, 10-Qs, 8-Ks, proxies), investor presentations, and earnings call transcripts to assess company performance and strategy.
  • Track the performance of your recommendations and conduct post-mortem analysis to continuously refine your investment process and analytical framework.
  • Identify and evaluate key Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors, integrating them into the overall investment analysis to assess long-term sustainability and risk.
  • Generate and vet new investment ideas by screening for companies that meet specific quantitative and qualitative criteria.
  • Communicate research and investment ideas effectively to internal stakeholders, including sales teams and client-facing relationship managers.
  • Attend industry conferences, analyst days, and management roadshows to deepen sector expertise and identify emerging trends.
  • Analyze corporate capital allocation strategies, including M&A, share buybacks, and dividend policies, to evaluate management's effectiveness in creating shareholder value.

Secondary Functions

  • Support senior analysts and portfolio managers with ad-hoc financial modeling, data gathering, and exploratory research projects.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the team's research processes, modeling templates, and analytical tools.
  • Mentor junior analysts and interns, providing guidance on financial analysis, modeling best practices, and effective communication.
  • Collaborate across different sector teams to share insights and debate cross-industry thematic trends and investment ideas.
  • Maintain and organize internal research databases, watchlists, and company-specific files to ensure information is accurate and accessible.
  • Assist in preparing materials for client meetings, portfolio reviews, and internal strategy sessions.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss market conditions, portfolio positioning, and potential investment ideas.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Financial Modeling: Mastery of building and maintaining detailed three-statement, DCF, LBO, and M&A models from scratch in Excel.
  • Valuation Expertise: Deep understanding and practical application of various valuation techniques (Relative, Intrinsic, SOTP, etc.).
  • Data & Research Platforms: High proficiency with Bloomberg Terminal, FactSet, CapIQ, or similar financial data providers.
  • Superior Excel Skills: Advanced functions, pivot tables, data manipulation, and charting are essential; VBA/macros are a significant plus.
  • Accounting Fluency: Strong grasp of US GAAP and/or IFRS, with the ability to dissect financial statements and footnotes to uncover underlying economic reality.
  • Data Analysis: Experience with SQL, Python (Pandas, NumPy), or R for data manipulation and statistical analysis is increasingly valued.
  • Market Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of equity markets, corporate finance principles, and micro/macroeconomic drivers.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from a top-tier university.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in Finance (MFin), MBA, or a related quantitative field.
  • CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation or active candidacy is highly preferred.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
