As an Equity Research Analyst, you are the engine of informed investment decisions. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and meticulously maintain complex, three-statement financial models to project company earnings, cash flow, and balance sheet performance under various scenarios.
  • Perform comprehensive valuation analysis using multiple methodologies, including Discounted Cash Flow (DCF), comparable company analysis (trading comps), precedent transaction analysis, and sum-of-the-parts (SOTP).
  • Author and publish in-depth equity research reports, including initiation of coverage reports, quarterly earnings reviews, and thematic industry deep-dives that articulate a clear and defensible investment thesis.
  • Formulate and defend investment recommendations (Buy, Hold, Sell) and price targets based on your proprietary research and financial analysis.
  • Build and cultivate relationships with the management teams of covered companies, attending investor days and conducting regular management calls to gain deeper insights.
  • Conduct extensive primary research by engaging with industry contacts, customers, suppliers, and competitors to validate assumptions and uncover differentiated insights (channel checks).
  • Proactively monitor and analyze industry-specific news, macroeconomic trends, competitive landscape shifts, and regulatory changes to assess their impact on covered companies.
  • Communicate investment theses, research findings, and stock recommendations persuasively to internal sales & trading teams and external institutional clients (e.g., mutual funds, hedge funds).
  • Host and participate in conference calls, webinars, and in-person meetings with clients to discuss your research, models, and market views.
  • Respond promptly and accurately to inquiries from institutional clients and the internal salesforce regarding covered stocks and industry developments.
  • Develop proprietary data sets and survey-based research to create a unique analytical edge and support non-consensus investment ideas.
  • Actively market your research ideas to clients, working closely with the sales team to generate trading activity and build the firm's research franchise.
  • Mentor and guide junior analysts and research associates, providing feedback on financial models, written reports, and analytical techniques.
  • Travel to industry conferences, trade shows, and company site visits to gather firsthand information and expand your professional network.
  • Continuously update financial models and investment ratings following quarterly earnings releases, M&A announcements, or other material company news.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the broader research team on collaborative, cross-sector thematic reports and presentations.
  • Contribute to the morning call by summarizing key overnight news and providing actionable updates on covered stocks.
  • Assist the investment banking division by providing industry expertise and insights for potential capital markets or M&A transactions.
  • Participate in the recruitment and training of new research associates and interns.
  • Liaise with data providers and internal technology teams to improve data collection processes and analytical tools.
  • Prepare materials and presentations for senior management that summarize sector performance and key research calls.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Financial Modeling: Mastery of building and maintaining detailed three-statement, DCF, LBO, and M&A models from scratch in Microsoft Excel.
  • Valuation Expertise: Deep understanding and practical application of various valuation techniques (Comps, Precedents, DCF, SOTP).
  • Data & Research Platforms: High proficiency with Bloomberg Terminal, FactSet, Capital IQ, and Thomson Reuters Eikon for data extraction and analysis.
  • Advanced Excel: Expertise in pivot tables, lookups, data tables, and other advanced functions for efficient data manipulation and analysis.
  • Accounting Fluency: Strong command of accounting principles (GAAP/IFRS) to critically analyze financial statements, including footnotes and SEC filings.
  • Statistical Analysis: Ability to perform regression analysis and interpret statistical data to identify trends and correlations.
  • Programming (Preferred): Working knowledge of Python (Pandas, Matplotlib) or SQL for handling large datasets and automating research tasks is a significant plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master's in Finance (MSF).
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, or active candidacy, is highly preferred.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-7 years of relevant experience in a highly analytical finance role.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in sell-side or buy-side equity research, investment banking, private equity, or a corporate development role within a specific industry is strongly preferred. Candidates with direct industry experience (e.g., an engineer working in semiconductor research) will also be considered.
