Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Accurately obtain, document, and interpret a full set of vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, and oxygen saturation, promptly reporting any abnormal findings to the Registered Nurse.
- Perform 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs) on patients as directed, ensuring proper lead placement and transmission of results for physician interpretation.
- Execute proficient phlebotomy techniques to draw blood samples for laboratory analysis, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and transport of all specimens.
- Initiate, monitor, and discontinue peripheral intravenous (IV) lines under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, adhering to strict sterile techniques.
- Provide direct patient care by assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), including patient hygiene, mobility, positioning, and comfort measures.
- Assist physicians and nurses with various medical procedures, such as suturing, lumbar punctures, incision and drainage, and pelvic exams, by preparing sterile fields, handing instruments, and supporting the patient.
- Apply, adjust, and remove orthopedic devices including splints, braces, and casts; instruct patients on the proper use of crutches and other mobility aids.
- Perform and document wound care, including cleaning, irrigating, and applying sterile dressings to minor wounds, abrasions, and lacerations.
- Respond immediately to emergency situations, including Code Blue and other medical alerts, and initiate or assist with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and other Basic Life Support (BLS) measures.
- Triage and room patients upon arrival to the Emergency Department, collecting initial patient information and chief complaints to facilitate prompt medical evaluation.
- Monitor patient status continuously, observing for any changes in condition or signs of distress, and report observations immediately to the assigned nurse or physician.
- Collect a variety of patient specimens, including urine, stool, and sputum, ensuring correct collection procedures and documentation.
- Transport patients safely to and from other departments, such as Radiology or inpatient units, utilizing appropriate transport equipment and patient handling techniques.
- Maintain the readiness of patient rooms and departmental equipment by cleaning, stocking, and organizing medical supplies and instruments after each use.
- Accurately and thoroughly document all patient care activities, procedures performed, and observations in the electronic medical record (EMR) in a timely manner.
- Serve as a patient advocate, ensuring patient and family communication needs are met and providing reassurance and information within the scope of practice.
- Set up and operate specialized medical equipment, such as cardiac monitors, pulse oximeters, and suction machines, performing basic troubleshooting as needed.
- Assist with post-mortem care with dignity and respect, preparing the deceased for transport in accordance with hospital policy.
- Manage patient flow within the department by facilitating room turnover and communicating with the charge nurse about bed availability and patient assignments.
- Participate in maintaining a safe and clean work environment by adhering to infection control policies, hazardous material protocols, and universal precautions.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Completion of an accredited EMT, CNA, or Medical Assistant program
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)

Experience Requirements
