Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate an escort vehicle, serving as either the lead "pilot" car or rear "chase" car, to guide and protect oversized, overweight, or otherwise restricted loads.
  • Maintain constant, clear, and professional two-way radio communication with the truck driver, other escort drivers, and relevant personnel, relaying critical information about road conditions, traffic, and potential hazards.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip route surveys to identify and document potential obstacles such as low clearances, narrow bridges, weight-restricted roads, and challenging turns.
  • Actively manage and direct traffic at intersections, narrow passages, and during complex maneuvers to ensure the safety of the general public and the transport team.
    ⚫- Utilize a height pole to accurately measure vertical clearances of bridges, overpasses, traffic signals, and power lines to prevent collisions and ensure the load's safe passage.
  • Ensure the oversized load and all escort vehicles are in strict compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, as well as the specific requirements outlined in the transport permit.
  • Display all required signage, flags, and lighting on the escort vehicle, ensuring they are clean, visible, and functioning correctly throughout the entire duration of the trip.
  • Navigate the approved route meticulously, providing turn-by-turn directions and advance warning of lane changes, exits, and required stops to the truck operator.
  • Monitor the movement and stability of the oversized load from a lead or chase position, immediately reporting any shifts, loose strapping, or other potential safety issues.
  • Provide a protective buffer between the oversized load and other motorists, creating a safe zone and preventing unsafe passing or merging.
  • Liaise professionally with state troopers, DOT officers, and other law enforcement officials during inspections or when assistance is required for traffic control.
  • Perform and document daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the escort vehicle, including checks on tires, fluids, lights, radio equipment, and safety supplies.
  • Assist the truck driver with maneuvering in tight spaces, such as job sites or rest areas, by acting as a spotter and providing ground guidance.
  • Maintain a high level of situational awareness at all times, anticipating the actions of other drivers and proactively identifying potential risks before they become emergencies.
  • Prepare and submit detailed daily logs, route reports, and incident reports in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies, such as vehicle breakdowns, traffic accidents, or sudden route blockages, by initiating safety protocols and coordinating with emergency services.
  • Ensure the escort vehicle is fully equipped with all required safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, traffic cones, and emergency triangles.
  • Aid in the placement and removal of temporary "Wide Load" or "Oversize Load" signs and flags on the transport vehicle itself.
  • Uphold a professional demeanor and appearance, serving as a positive representative of the company to clients, officials, and the public.
  • Work irregular and long hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and be prepared for extended periods away from home to see a project through to completion.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with minor on-the-road vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting to minimize downtime.
  • Contribute to the post-trip review process, providing feedback on route viability and challenges to improve future planning.
  • Collaborate with the permitting department by providing on-the-ground intelligence and feedback about road conditions and closures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid state-issued Driver's License with a verifiable clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Current, state-specific Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator (P/EVO) certification (e.g., WA, UT, NY, FL, etc.) where required.
