Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and implement engaging, communicative, and proficiency-based lesson plans that align with the established curriculum and cater to the diverse needs of a multicultural student population.
  • Deliver dynamic and student-centered instruction across all language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and pronunciation) using a variety of effective teaching methodologies.
  • Create a positive, supportive, and culturally sensitive classroom environment that encourages student participation, minimizes language learning anxiety, and promotes cross-cultural understanding.
  • Conduct comprehensive student assessments using a variety of formal and informal tools (e.g., quizzes, exams, portfolios, presentations) to accurately gauge language proficiency and monitor progress.
  • Utilize assessment data to inform instructional decisions, provide targeted feedback to students, and differentiate instruction to meet individual learner needs and goals.
  • Integrate educational technology, multimedia resources, and authentic materials into lessons to enhance learning, increase student engagement, and develop digital literacy skills.
  • Plan and facilitate learning activities that connect language skills to real-world contexts, including workplace communication, academic readiness, and daily life situations.
  • Provide individualized support and constructive feedback to students during and outside of class, holding regular office hours or tutorials as needed.
  • Foster the development of learner autonomy by teaching students effective language learning strategies and encouraging them to take ownership of their learning process.
  • Maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of current TESOL theories, methodologies, and best practices through ongoing professional development and collaboration with colleagues.
  • Manage classroom dynamics effectively, ensuring a respectful and collaborative learning community for students from a wide range of backgrounds and proficiency levels.
  • Prepare students for standardized English proficiency tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge exams, if applicable to the program.
  • Adapt instructional materials and teaching strategies to accommodate various learning styles, abilities, and age groups within the classroom.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student attendance, performance, and progress in the institution's learning management system (LMS) or student information system (SIS).
  • Communicate proactively with students regarding their progress, attendance, and any academic or behavioral concerns.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in student recruitment, orientation, and placement testing events to ensure learners are appropriately placed in classes that match their proficiency level.
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors and academic staff in curriculum review, development, and revision projects to ensure program quality and consistency.
  • Contribute to the development and selection of instructional materials, textbooks, and digital resources for the ESL program.
  • Attend and actively participate in faculty meetings, professional development workshops, and institutional events.
  • Assist in organizing and chaperoning extracurricular activities, conversation clubs, or cultural events that provide students with additional language practice opportunities.
  • Serve as a cultural bridge, helping students navigate and understand the local culture while also celebrating the diversity within the classroom.
  • Liaise with academic advisors, student support services, and other departments to provide holistic support for students and address any barriers to their success.
  • Contribute to program accreditation and reporting efforts by collecting and providing necessary data and documentation.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Curriculum and Lesson Planning: Expertise in designing coherent, standards-aligned lesson plans and long-range curriculum maps.
  • Language Proficiency Assessment: Skilled in using frameworks like CEFR or WIDA and administering various diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments.
  • TESOL Methodologies: Deep understanding and practical application of communicative language teaching (CLT), task-based learning, and other ESL teaching approaches.
  • Classroom Management: Ability to effectively manage a diverse, multicultural classroom to create a productive learning environment.
  • Educational Technology Integration: Proficiency with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas, Moodle), smartboards, video conferencing tools (Zoom, Teams), and language learning applications.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • A recognized TESOL, TEFL, or CELTA certificate (120+ hours with a practicum component).

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Education with a focus on language, or a closely related field.

Experience Requirements
