Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive developmental, line, and copy editing on a variety of essays, including personal statements, statements of purpose, academic papers, and supplemental application essays.
  • Provide substantive, actionable, and encouraging feedback on essay structure, narrative coherence, argumentation, and overall thematic development.
  • Guide writers in refining their unique voice and tone to ensure authenticity and alignment with the specific audience and purpose of the essay.
  • Correct grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, punctuation inaccuracies, and syntax issues while preserving the author's original intent and style.
  • Analyze essay prompts and client brainstorming materials to ensure the final written piece directly and effectively addresses all requirements.
  • Assist clients in strengthening their arguments, clarifying their logic, and enhancing the persuasive impact of their writing.
  • Restructure sentences and paragraphs to improve readability, flow, and clarity, ensuring a seamless reading experience.
  • Help writers brainstorm compelling topics and develop strong, logical outlines before they begin the formal writing process.
  • Review and edit documents for adherence to specific citation and formatting guidelines, such as MLA, APA, or Chicago style.
  • Coach non-native English speakers on linguistic nuances, idiomatic expressions, and cultural context to help them produce natural-sounding prose.
  • Manage a diverse portfolio of editing projects, effectively prioritizing tasks to meet multiple, often tight, deadlines without compromising quality.
  • Deliver detailed, line-by-line edits using tools like Microsoft Word's Track Changes or Google Docs' Suggesting Mode.
  • Write comprehensive summary reports for clients, highlighting key strengths and detailing strategic areas for improvement in their writing.
  • Evaluate the core message of an essay to ensure it is compelling, memorable, and effectively showcases the writer's strengths and experiences.
  • Fact-check critical information, dates, and claims within essays to ensure accuracy and credibility, particularly in academic and research-based writing.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of internal style guides, best practice documents, and training resources for the editorial team.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and changes in university admissions standards, academic writing conventions, and specific fields of study.
  • Collaborate with client service managers and other editors to ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for every writer.
  • Participate in peer-review and quality assurance processes, providing constructive feedback to other editors to uphold our standards of excellence.
