Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Operate various models of excavators, track hoes, and other heavy machinery with a high degree of skill to excavate, move, and grade earth, rock, gravel, or other materials.
Precisely excavate trenches for the installation of utilities such as water mains, sewer lines, gas lines, and electrical conduits, ensuring proper depth and grade.
Perform mass excavation and backfilling for building foundations, retaining walls, and other structures according to detailed engineering plans.
Interpret site plans, blueprints, grade stakes, and digital models to perform cuts, fills, and final grading with accuracy.
Load and unload construction materials, spoil, and aggregates onto and from haul trucks, ensuring balanced and safe loads.
Conduct daily pre-operational safety and maintenance checks on equipment, including fluid levels, hydraulic systems, and track integrity, to ensure operational readiness.
Manipulate multiple levers, joysticks, and pedals simultaneously to control the machine's boom, dipper, bucket, and rotation with precision and care.
Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and OSHA regulations, including trenching safety, shoring requirements, and spotter communication protocols.
Collaborate closely with ground personnel, pipe layers, and foremen using hand signals and radio communication to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
Utilize GPS, laser guidance systems, and other advanced machine control technologies to achieve precise grading and excavation results.
Perform fine grading and finishing work to prepare sub-grades for concrete, asphalt, or landscaping with minimal rework.
Identify and safely work around existing underground utilities, overhead power lines, and other potential job-site hazards.
Systematically dig and set trench boxes or other shoring systems to protect workers in deep excavations.
Change and inspect machine attachments like buckets, hammers, and compactors, ensuring they are securely fastened and functioning correctly.
Maintain situational awareness at all times, monitoring the machine’s position, stability, and proximity to people, structures, and other equipment.

Secondary Functions

Assist with general labor tasks on the job site during equipment downtime, contributing to overall team productivity.
Complete daily operational logs, equipment inspection reports, and maintenance records accurately and in a timely manner.
Participate actively in daily "toolbox talks" and safety meetings to discuss potential hazards and reinforce safe work practices.
Secure equipment at the end of the shift, including proper shutdown, cleaning, and parking in designated, secure areas.
Communicate any equipment malfunctions, performance issues, or required repairs to the site supervisor or maintenance team promptly.
