Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Safely and efficiently operate various types of heavy construction equipment, including hydraulic excavators, trackhoes, backhoes, and loaders, for a wide range of tasks.
Perform mass excavation and earthmoving operations, including cutting, filling, and shaping land to establish required grades and elevations based on project plans.
Execute precise trenching for the installation of utilities such as water mains, sewer lines, storm drains, and electrical conduits, maintaining proper depth and slope.
Carefully backfill trenches and foundations, compacting soil in lifts to meet specified engineering and density requirements to prevent future settling.
Read and interpret site plans, construction drawings, and grade stakes to understand work requirements and ensure accurate placement of excavated materials and structures.
Operate equipment with attached hydraulic hammers, breakers, or pulverizers to demolish concrete structures, break rock, and clear sites for new construction.
Load and unload earth, rock, aggregate, and other construction materials onto and off of haul trucks, ensuring balanced loads and site safety.
Perform fine grading and final surface preparation for building pads, roadways, and parking lots, creating a smooth and precise base for subsequent construction phases.
Skillfully maneuver heavy equipment in congested areas and in close proximity to personnel, existing structures, and live underground utilities, exercising extreme caution.
Conduct thorough pre-operational inspections and walk-arounds on equipment to check fluid levels, tire pressure, and the condition of tracks, attachments, and safety systems.
Install and remove trench boxes, shoring, and other protective systems to ensure the safety of ground personnel working within excavations, in compliance with OSHA standards.
Operate GPS-enabled excavation equipment (e.g., Topcon, Trimble) to perform complex grading and excavation tasks with high precision, reducing the need for constant staking.
Identify and understand different soil types and conditions, adjusting excavation techniques accordingly to maintain slope stability and operational efficiency.
Communicate effectively with foremen, superintendents, and ground crew using hand signals and two-way radios to coordinate tasks and ensure a safe work environment.
Adhere strictly to all company, client, and regulatory (OSHA, MSHA) safety protocols and procedures on the job site at all times.

Secondary Functions

Perform routine and preventative maintenance on equipment, such as lubricating fittings, cleaning tracks, and replacing worn teeth or cutting edges.
Maintain accurate daily logs of equipment usage, maintenance activities, and work performed to support project documentation and reporting.
Assist in site layout, setting up grade stakes, and using laser levels to verify elevations and grades prior to and during excavation.
Mentor and provide guidance to junior operators and laborers on safe operating practices and basic equipment maintenance.
Secure the job site and equipment at the end of the workday, ensuring machinery is parked safely and protected from vandalism or theft.
Participate actively in daily job hazard analysis (JHA) meetings and safety toolbox talks to promote a culture of safety awareness.
Manage spoil piles effectively, ensuring they are placed in designated areas and do not impede site traffic or create hazards.
