Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Independently set up, operate, and tear down single and twin-screw extrusion lines according to detailed work orders and production schedules.
  • Perform complex die changes, tooling adjustments, and equipment calibration to produce products that meet precise dimensional specifications.
  • Continuously monitor key process parameters, including temperatures, line speed, pressures, and material feed rates, making real-time adjustments to maintain product quality.
  • Conduct first-piece, in-process, and final inspections of extruded products using precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, pin gauges, and visual standards.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose process inconsistencies, equipment malfunctions, and quality defects to minimize downtime and scrap generation.
  • Meticulously read and interpret engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and specification sheets to ensure product conformity.
  • Manage the handling, mixing, and loading of raw polymer materials, including resins, colorants, and additives, ensuring correct formulations.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on extrusion machinery and downstream equipment, such as cleaning screws, barrels, and dies.
  • Accurately complete all required production and quality documentation, including run logs, inspection reports, and data entry into the manufacturing ERP system.
  • Operate and maintain downstream equipment, including pullers, cutters, saws, winders, and packaging machinery.
  • Execute efficient and timely color and material changes, implementing purging procedures to reduce cross-contamination and waste.
  • Ensure all finished products are properly packaged, labeled, and staged for shipment or transfer to the next production stage.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with the maintenance department to diagnose and resolve complex mechanical or electrical issues on the extrusion line.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement projects and lean manufacturing initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Assist in the training and mentorship of junior technicians and machine operators, sharing best practices and technical knowledge.
  • Maintain a high level of housekeeping within the work cell, adhering to 5S principles and keeping the area clean, safe, and organized.
  • Manage the reprocessing of scrap material, including operating grinders and ensuring the recycled material meets quality standards for reuse.
  • Communicate effectively with shift supervisors, quality control personnel, and other team members regarding production status, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Assist in the trial and evaluation of new materials, tooling, or process parameters to support R&D and product development efforts.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and procedures, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Support inventory management by tracking raw material consumption and reporting any discrepancies or low-stock situations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Extrusion Machine Operation: Proven experience operating and setting up single or twin-screw extruders for plastics, rubber, or similar materials.
  • Precision Measurement: Proficiency in using a variety of measurement tools, including digital/dial calipers, micrometers, tape measures, and optical comparators.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to read, interpret, and work from complex engineering drawings, schematics, and technical work orders.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong understanding of mechanical principles for effective troubleshooting of machinery, tooling, and processing issues.
  • Material Knowledge: Familiarity with various polymer resins (e.g., PVC, HDPE, ABS, Polycarbonate), their properties, and processing requirements.
  • Process Control: Skill in monitoring and adjusting machine parameters (temperature, speed, pressure) to control product quality and dimensions.
  • Tooling & Die Maintenance: Experience with the assembly, disassembly, cleaning, and basic maintenance of extrusion dies and tooling.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Vocational Certificate or Associate's Degree in a technical field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5+ years of direct, hands-on experience as an Extrusion Technician or Operator in a manufacturing setting.

Preferred:

  • Specific experience with profile extrusion, sheet extrusion, tubing, or blown film processes.
  • Experience working within an ISO 9001 or similarly regulated environment is highly desirable.
