Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate and maintain sophisticated automated cutting machinery, such as Gerber or Lectra systems, to execute precise, high-volume cuts based on digital markers.
- Meticulously review production work orders, technical specification sheets, and digital patterns to fully understand cutting requirements, quantities, and material types.
- Skillfully spread single or multiple plies of fabric onto cutting tables, ensuring perfect alignment, correct tension, and adherence to pattern direction (nap and grain).
- Conduct thorough pre-production inspections of all fabric rolls to identify and flag any material flaws, color inconsistencies, or weaving defects before cutting begins.
- Expertly utilize manual and hand-held cutting tools, including rotary cutters, straight knives, and shears, for custom orders, sample making, or intricate design details.
- Maximize material utilization and minimize costly fabric waste by strategically analyzing and optimizing the layout of pattern markers on the fabric.
- Accurately count, sort, and bundle all cut components, verifying that each bundle is complete for seamless hand-off to the sewing and assembly departments.
- Clearly and accurately label all cut bundles with essential tracking information, such as style number, size, color, and lot number, to ensure production traceability.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on all cutting equipment, including blade sharpening/replacement, lubrication, and daily cleaning, to ensure optimal performance.
- Troubleshoot and resolve minor operational issues with cutting machinery, and promptly report complex mechanical failures to the maintenance supervisor.
- Maintain meticulous and accurate daily production logs, documenting fabric consumption, yardage cut, number of units produced, and any material discrepancies.
- Strictly adhere to all company and industry safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and machine guards.
- Collaborate effectively with pattern makers and designers to provide feedback on marker efficiency and suggest adjustments for better fabric yield.
- Ensure the cutting room remains clean, organized, and free of potential hazards to support a safe and highly efficient operational workflow.
- Demonstrate precision in matching fabric patterns, such as plaids, stripes, and complex prints, during the spreading process to ensure garment continuity.
- Monitor the cutting process from start to finish to guarantee that all cuts are clean, precise, and consistently meet the company's high-quality standards.
- Operate fabric spreading machines to automate the laying-out process for multiple plies, monitoring for tension and edge alignment.
- Verify that the correct fabric type, color code, and lot are pulled from inventory and used for each specific production order.
- Calibrate automated cutting equipment as needed to ensure it performs according to precise measurement standards and software specifications.
- Communicate proactively with production supervisors regarding workflow status, potential delays, or material shortages that could impact production schedules.
- Assist in sorting and organizing cut work into designated carts or bins for efficient transfer to the next stage of the production process.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in managing and organizing the inventory of raw materials and cutting room supplies, such as plotter paper and replacement blades.
- Contribute to the training and mentoring of new or junior cutting room personnel on machine operation, safety procedures, and quality standards.
- Support the sample-making department by cutting materials for prototypes and pre-production samples as needed.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss production goals, challenges, and continuous improvement initiatives within the department.
