Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide direct, hands-on supervision and leadership to a diverse team of welders, fabricators, and machine operators, setting clear expectations and fostering a culture of accountability.
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage daily and weekly production schedules to meet ambitious deadlines and customer requirements, adjusting for unforeseen challenges.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to ensure all fabricated components meet precise design and quality standards.
  • Assign work tasks to team members based on their skill sets and project priorities, ensuring optimal workflow and resource allocation across the shop floor.
  • Act as the primary technical resource for the fabrication team, providing guidance on welding techniques, machine setup, and complex assembly challenges.
  • Enforce all company safety policies and OSHA regulations, conducting regular safety talks, job hazard analyses, and incident investigations to maintain a zero-harm environment.
  • Champion quality control throughout the fabrication process, performing in-process and final inspections to minimize defects, rework, and scrap.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and Kaizen principles to enhance productivity, reduce waste, and streamline operations.
  • Manage the professional development of your team by conducting performance reviews, identifying training needs, and providing regular coaching and mentorship.
  • Maintain accurate production records, including labor hours, material usage, and project completion statuses, using our ERP/MRP system.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production bottlenecks, equipment malfunctions, and personnel issues in a timely and effective manner to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, project management, and quality assurance teams to resolve design issues and ensure seamless project execution.
  • Oversee the preventative maintenance schedules for all fabrication equipment, including welders, press brakes, shears, and CNC machinery, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Manage inventory levels of raw materials, consumables, and hardware, coordinating with the purchasing department to prevent stockouts.
  • Lead the hiring, onboarding, and training processes for new fabrication team members, ensuring they are well-integrated and technically proficient.
  • Conduct daily team huddles to communicate priorities, review safety topics, and address any immediate concerns from the shop floor.
  • Ensure all finished products are properly handled, packaged, and staged for shipment or subsequent manufacturing processes.
  • Prepare and present regular reports to management on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, production efficiency, quality metrics, and safety records.
  • Investigate and document non-conformances, implementing robust corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to prevent recurrence.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and respectful team environment that encourages open communication and boosts employee morale and engagement.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the quoting and estimation process by providing expert input on labor hours and material requirements for new projects.
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams to provide a manufacturing perspective during the design and development phases.
  • Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new manufacturing technologies, equipment, and software to keep the department competitive.
  • Manage departmental administrative tasks, including timecard approvals, vacation scheduling, and supply requisitions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: Advanced ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, weld symbols, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Welding Processes: Expert knowledge of various welding techniques, including MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), and Stick (SMAW), across different metals.
  • Metal Fabrication Techniques: Proficiency with a wide range of fabrication equipment such as press brakes, shears, plasma cutters, rollers, and saws.
  • Lean Manufacturing Principles: Proven experience implementing tools like 5S, Kaizen, and Value Stream Mapping to drive efficiency.
  • ERP/MRP Systems: Competency in using enterprise resource planning software for production scheduling, inventory management, and reporting.
  • Quality Inspection Tools: Skilled in using measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, tape measures, and weld gauges to ensure parts meet specifications.
  • OSHA & Safety Regulations: In-depth understanding of industrial safety standards and a commitment to enforcing them rigorously.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree in a technical field or a Certificate from a vocational/trade school.
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or similar industry certification is a strong plus.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

A minimum of 5-7 years of hands-on experience in a metal fabrication, welding, or machining environment. This must include at least 2-3 years in a formal leadership or supervisory capacity, where you were responsible for directing the work of others and managing production outcomes.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a custom, job-shop fabrication environment as opposed to high-volume repetitive manufacturing.
  • A proven track record of successfully implementing continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Direct experience with structural steel, pressure vessels, or precision sheet metal fabrication is highly desirable.
