Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Rigorously scrutinize and verify all factual assertions within written, audio, and visual content, including statistics, dates, names, historical events, and scientific claims.
Conduct in-depth research using a wide array of sources, including primary documents, academic journals, government databases, expert interviews, and news archives like LexisNexis and Westlaw.
Evaluate the credibility, potential bias, and reliability of all sources used by content creators, and identify stronger, more authoritative sources where necessary.
Systematically document the verification process for every piece of content, creating a clear and defensible "proof file" with annotated sources and research trails.
Communicate findings, required corrections, and contextual nuances clearly and diplomatically to writers, editors, and other stakeholders, often under tight deadlines.
Perform detailed checks on quotes and attributions, ensuring they are transcribed accurately and presented within their original context.
Analyze and verify visual media by conducting reverse image searches, examining metadata, and using geolocation tools to confirm the time and place of photos and videos.
Stay consistently informed on a broad range of subjects, including current events, politics, science, and culture, to effectively assess the veracity of diverse content topics.
Uphold and contribute to the evolution of the organization's internal fact-checking standards, style guides, and verification protocols.
Identify and flag potentially sensitive, legally problematic, or defamatory statements, and collaborate with legal counsel when necessary for review.
Conduct original research to substantiate or debunk complex claims that lack readily available public information.
Provide detailed feedback on content drafts, suggesting alternative phrasing to improve accuracy, clarity, and precision without compromising the author's voice.
Fact-check a variety of content formats, including long-form articles, breaking news reports, social media posts, video scripts, podcasts, and marketing materials.
Manage multiple fact-checking projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks effectively to meet overlapping publication schedules.
Develop and maintain a robust network of expert contacts across various fields who can be consulted to verify specialized information.
Assess the overall context of a statement, ensuring that a technically accurate fact is not used in a misleading way.
