Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Represent clients in all aspects of family law proceedings, including divorce, legal separation, child custody, visitation rights, and child/spousal support cases.
  • Conduct comprehensive initial client consultations to assess case viability, discuss legal strategies, and establish clear, achievable objectives.
  • Draft, review, and file a wide range of legal documents, such as pleadings, motions, discovery requests, settlement agreements, and prenuptial/postnuptial agreements.
  • Manage the entire litigation lifecycle for a diverse caseload, from case inception through discovery, settlement negotiations, and, if necessary, trial and post-judgment matters.
  • Skillfully advocate for clients' interests during complex negotiations, mediation sessions, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) proceedings to achieve favorable and cost-effective settlements.
  • Thoroughly prepare clients and key witnesses for depositions, hearings, and court appearances, ensuring they are well-informed and confident in their testimony.
  • Perform in-depth legal research and analysis on complex family law statutes, case law, and procedural rules to build robust and persuasive legal arguments.
  • Develop and execute strategic case plans meticulously tailored to the unique goals, financial circumstances, and emotional needs of each client.
  • Appear in court for motion hearings, temporary orders, and trials, presenting evidence and delivering compelling oral arguments before judges and magistrates.
  • Calculate and argue for appropriate child support and spousal support (alimony) based on state-specific guidelines and detailed financial evidence.
  • Address complex property division issues, including the identification, valuation, and equitable distribution of marital assets such as real estate, investments, and business interests.
  • Handle highly sensitive cases involving domestic violence, protective orders, and emergency restraining orders with the utmost discretion, empathy, and urgency.
  • Manage a substantial caseload efficiently, demonstrating exceptional organizational skills to prioritize tasks, meet all court-mandated deadlines, and maintain immaculate case files.
  • Maintain consistent, transparent, and empathetic communication with clients, providing regular updates on case progress and promptly responding to their questions and concerns.
  • Negotiate and draft comprehensive parenting plans and custody agreements that are detailed, practical, and always prioritize the best interests of the children involved.

Secondary Functions

  • Accurately and contemporaneously track all billable hours and case-related expenses in compliance with firm policies and client retainer agreements.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency in state-specific family law statutes, civil procedure, and rules of evidence.
  • Strong legal research and writing abilities, with expert-level use of legal research platforms like Westlaw, LexisNexis, or Fastcase.
  • Demonstrable first-chair trial and extensive courtroom experience, including motion practice, evidentiary hearings, and oral arguments.
  • Advanced skill in drafting and negotiating complex legal documents, including Marital Settlement Agreements, Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDROs), and Prenuptial Agreements.
  • Comprehensive experience managing all phases of the discovery process, including conducting and defending depositions, drafting interrogatories, and handling requests for production.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school.

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) with a certificate, concentration, or LL.M. in Family Law.
  • Completion of advanced training in mediation or collaborative law.
