Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Manage a full caseload of family law matters from intake and initial client consultation through to final resolution, including post-judgment modifications.
- Represent clients in all facets of family law proceedings, including divorce, dissolution of marriage, child custody, visitation rights, child support, spousal support/alimony, and equitable distribution of assets.
- Conduct comprehensive and empathetic client interviews to gather critical case information, understand client objectives, and develop tailored legal strategies.
- Draft, review, and file a wide array of legal documents, such as pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, settlement agreements, and proposed court orders.
- Prepare for and skillfully argue motions in court, attend status conferences and hearings, and conduct bench trials, including the direct and cross-examination of witnesses.
- Lead and actively participate in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes, including mediation and collaborative law sessions, to achieve amicable and cost-effective settlements.
- Perform extensive legal research on complex and novel family law issues using Westlaw, LexisNexis, and other legal research platforms to build and support case strategy.
- Manage all phases of the discovery process, including drafting and responding to interrogatories, requests for production of documents, and requests for admissions.
- Conduct and defend depositions of parties, fact witnesses, and expert witnesses to gather essential testimony and evidence for trial.
- Analyze and value complex marital estates, including businesses, real estate holdings, investment portfolios, and retirement accounts, often in collaboration with financial experts.
- Negotiate fair and comprehensive settlement agreements on behalf of clients, including Marital Settlement Agreements, Parenting Plans, and pre- and post-nuptial agreements.
- Maintain consistent, clear, and compassionate communication with clients, providing regular updates on case progress and advising on legal rights, obligations, and potential outcomes.
- Meticulously manage case files, deadlines, and calendars to ensure all statutory and court-mandated deadlines are met with precision.
- Calculate child support and spousal support obligations based on state guidelines, statutory factors, and specific case facts.
- Advocate for clients' interests in sensitive matters involving domestic violence, including obtaining and defending against restraining orders and protective orders.
- Thoroughly prepare clients and witnesses for court hearings, depositions, and mediation sessions to ensure they are confident, informed, and ready to participate effectively.
- Collaborate with paralegals, legal assistants, and other firm personnel to efficiently manage caseloads and deliver a superior client service experience.
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous billing records for all client work in compliance with firm policies and ethical standards.
- Stay abreast of evolving family law legislation, recent case law, and local court procedures to maintain a high level of professional competence.
- Handle post-judgment modification and enforcement actions related to custody, support, and other provisions of final court orders.
- Work closely with and retain outside experts such as forensic accountants, business valuators, and custody evaluators to build strong, evidence-based cases.
Secondary Functions
- Mentor junior associates and paralegals, providing guidance on case strategy, legal writing, and courtroom procedure.
- Contribute to firm-wide marketing and business development initiatives, including writing articles for the firm's blog, presenting at legal seminars, and participating in community events.
- Collaborate with attorneys in other practice areas (e.g., Estate Planning, Real Estate, Tax) to provide comprehensive legal services on cross-disciplinary client matters.
- Participate in regular case review meetings and practice group strategy sessions to foster collaboration and ensure the highest standards of legal service across the firm.
Required Skills & Competencies

- Litigation & Courtroom Advocacy: Proven ability to effectively present and argue a case in court, including trial experience.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school.
- Admission to the State Bar and in good standing.

- Juris Doctor (J.D.) with a certificate, concentration, or LL.M. in Family Law.
- Completion of mediation or collaborative law training programs.
