Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise, train, and coordinate the daily activities of general farm workers, equipment operators, and seasonal crews to ensure operational efficiency and safety.
  • Plan and direct all field operations, including soil preparation, tillage, planting, fertilization, irrigation, and harvesting of crops.
  • Operate a wide range of heavy agricultural machinery, such as tractors, combines, sprayers, and planters, and provide training to staff on their proper use.
  • Monitor crop health and progress throughout the growing season, identifying and diagnosing issues related to pests, weeds, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies.
  • Implement and oversee integrated pest management (IPM) strategies and the precise application of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides according to agronomic recommendations.
  • Manage and maintain all farm irrigation systems, including center pivots, drip lines, and pumps, scheduling water application based on crop needs and weather conditions.
  • Assign daily tasks and work schedules to the farm team, monitoring performance to ensure targets for quality and productivity are met.
  • Enforce strict adherence to all farm safety protocols and government health and safety regulations to maintain a secure work environment.
  • Perform and delegate routine maintenance, servicing, and minor repairs on all farm equipment, vehicles, and machinery to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate operational records, including planting dates, chemical applications, yield data, employee hours, and equipment maintenance logs.
  • Assist the Farm Manager in developing operational budgets, planning crop rotations, and making purchasing decisions for seed, fertilizer, and chemicals.
  • Oversee the logistics of harvesting operations, including coordinating equipment, labor, and transportation of crops to storage facilities or market.
  • Conduct regular inspections of farm infrastructure, including buildings, fences, and water systems, and arrange for necessary repairs or improvements.
  • Evaluate soil conditions and weather forecasts to make timely and informed decisions regarding daily and weekly farm activities.
  • Implement soil conservation and health improvement practices, such as cover cropping, no-till farming, and nutrient management plans.
  • Ensure all post-harvest activities, including grain drying, storage, and quality control checks, are executed to established standards.
  • Communicate effectively with the Farm Manager regarding operational progress, challenges, and resource requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve on-the-ground issues, from equipment malfunctions to personnel conflicts, in a swift and professional manner.
  • Utilize precision agriculture technology, including GPS guidance, auto-steer, and farm management software, to optimize field operations and data collection.
  • Coordinate with external vendors, suppliers, agronomists, and crop consultants to ensure timely delivery of services and supplies.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc requests for crop yield data, historical application rates, and exploratory operational analysis.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of the organization's long-term agricultural strategy and land use roadmap.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Farm Equipment Operation: Proficiency with tractors, combines, sprayers, planters, and GPS-guided systems.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain agricultural machinery and equipment.
  • Agronomy & Crop Management: Deep understanding of crop life cycles, soil science, and best practices for planting, growth, and harvesting.
  • Irrigation Management: Expertise in operating, maintaining, and scheduling various types of irrigation systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of progressive, hands-on experience in production agriculture.

Preferred: At least 2 years of experience in a supervisory or lead-hand role on a commercial farm, demonstrating direct responsibility for crew management and operational decision-making.
