Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot multi-station cold heading and forming machines (e.g., National, Waterbury, Formax) to produce intricate fasteners and components to exact specifications.
  • Perform highly complex and precise machine setups, including die and punch changes, tooling adjustments, transfer mechanism timing, and feed/cutoff calibration.
  • Skillfully operate and configure a variety of thread rolling machinery, including flat die, planetary, and cylindrical rollers, to form external threads on fastener blanks.
  • Read and meticulously interpret complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) callouts, and manufacturing work orders.
  • Utilize a comprehensive range of precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, vernier calipers, optical comparators, profilometers, and various gauges, to conduct rigorous in-process quality checks.
  • Continuously monitor machine operations, using auditory and visual cues to anticipate and identify signs of malfunction, tooling wear, or part defects.
  • Execute precise adjustments to machine controls, tooling offsets, and material feed mechanisms to correct dimensional discrepancies and maintain part quality throughout long production runs.
  • Conduct routine and preventative maintenance on all assigned machinery, including lubrication schedules, cleaning, and replacing worn components to ensure optimal performance and minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical, pneumatic, and operational issues with cold headers, thread rollers, and auxiliary equipment, implementing effective and timely corrective actions.
  • Select, inspect, install, and align critical tooling, dies, and fixtures, ensuring they are appropriate for the material type and specific part being produced.
  • Manage raw material at the workstation, including safely loading heavy wire coils onto dereelers, welding coil ends, and monitoring material consumption against production orders.
  • Perform and document first-piece, in-process, and final part inspections, recording results on quality control charts and submitting first article inspection (FAI) samples for lab verification.
  • Collaborate directly with Quality Assurance and Engineering departments to address and resolve non-conformance issues, and actively participate in root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
  • Strictly adhere to all company and industry safety protocols, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and hazardous material handling.
  • Meticulously complete all required production and quality documentation, including digital and paper-based production logs, inspection reports, and Statistical Process Control (SPC) data entry.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior machinists and machine operators on proper setup, operation, and quality inspection procedures.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives, such as Kaizen events, 5S workplace organization, and lean manufacturing projects, to enhance productivity, quality, and safety.
  • Assist the tooling department with the evaluation of worn or damaged dies and punches, providing feedback for repairs or new tool orders.
  • Support the New Product Introduction (NPI) process by providing critical feedback on part manufacturability and participating in developmental and prototype production runs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area, ensuring tools, gauges, and materials are properly stored and accessible.
  • Collaborate with the maintenance team to schedule and support major machine repairs, overhauls, and installations.
  • Monitor and manage the inventory of consumable supplies and spare parts at the workstation level, initiating requests for replenishment as needed.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Cold Header Operation: Deep proficiency in the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of multi-die cold forming/heading machines (e.g., National, Nedschroef, Formax).
  • Thread Rolling Expertise: Proven skill in setting up and operating flat die, planetary, or cylindrical thread rolling equipment to produce various thread forms.
  • Blueprint & GD&T Mastery: Advanced ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, with a strong, practical understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Precision Metrology: Expert-level use of a wide array of precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, profilometers, and thread gauges.
  • Tooling & Die Setup: Extensive hands-on experience with the selection, installation, alignment, and fine-tuning of punches, dies, and other forming tools.
  • Mechanical Troubleshooting: Strong diagnostic and problem-solving capabilities for identifying and resolving mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues in complex machinery.
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC): Working knowledge of SPC principles and the ability to use data to monitor, control, and improve the manufacturing process.
  • Material Knowledge: Familiarity with various metal alloys used in fastener manufacturing, such as steel, stainless steel, titanium, and nickel alloys, and their forming characteristics.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical Certificate or Associate's Degree in Machining, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field.
  • Completion of a formal Machinist/Toolmaker apprenticeship.
