Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete, end-to-end installation of various fence types, including wood privacy, vinyl, chain-link, aluminum, and custom-designed fences, ensuring precise alignment and structural stability.
  • Interpret blueprints, project plans, and work orders to determine the precise layout, materials, and specifications required for each unique job site.
  • Perform accurate site layout and measurement, staking out fence lines and marking post locations with meticulous attention to property lines and project requirements.
  • Operate heavy and light construction equipment, including skid steers, trenchers, and powered augers, to efficiently and safely excavate post holes to the required depth and diameter.
  • Prepare and pour concrete footings for fence posts, ensuring the mix is correct and that each post is set perfectly plumb and level for maximum durability.
  • Skillfully measure, cut, and assemble fence components such as rails, pickets, and panels using a variety of power saws, drills, and pneumatic nail guns.
  • Expertly install and hang gates of all sizes, ensuring they are level, swing correctly, and are fitted with appropriate latches, hinges, and hardware for secure operation.
  • Conduct detailed repair and maintenance on existing fences, which includes replacing damaged posts, rails, or pickets to restore functionality and appearance.
  • Fabricate custom fence sections and gates in-shop or on-site according to specific client designs and architectural plans.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and OSHA safety protocols, maintaining a safe and clean work environment for yourself, your crew, and the public at all times.
  • Manage and maintain all assigned tools, equipment, and company vehicles, reporting any malfunctions or necessary repairs to the supervisor promptly.
  • Load and unload building materials and equipment from company vehicles, ensuring all supplies are secured safely for transport and handled correctly on site.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with clients on-site to provide project updates, answer questions, and ensure complete customer satisfaction upon project completion.
  • Train and mentor junior installers and laborers, providing clear instruction on proper techniques, safety procedures, and quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve unforeseen issues that may arise on the job site, such as unexpected terrain, underground utilities, or material defects.
  • Ensure the final installed product is flawless, meets all quality control benchmarks, and is ready for client inspection.
  • Maintain a clean and organized job site throughout the project and perform a thorough cleanup of all debris and materials upon completion.
  • Precisely operate a variety of hand and power tools, including circular saws, miter saws, drills, levels, and post-hole diggers, to build and install fences.
  • Read and follow detailed project specifications to ensure the fence is built to the correct height, length, and style.
  • Apply stains, paints, or weather-resistant sealants to wood fences to enhance their longevity and appearance as required by the project.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a 2-3 person crew, effectively coordinating tasks to maximize efficiency and meet project deadlines.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Fence Installation Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency in installing wood, vinyl, chain-link, and aluminum fencing systems.
  • Power Tool Proficiency: Mastery of tools such as miter saws, circular saws, table saws, nail guns, impact drivers, and power augers.
  • Accurate Measuring & Layout: Exceptional skill with tape measures, levels, lasers, and chalk lines to ensure perfect alignment and grading.
  • Carpentry & Framing: Solid understanding of general carpentry principles, including cutting, joining, and framing techniques.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, site plans, and work orders accurately.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5 years of direct, hands-on experience in fence installation or a closely related carpentry field (e.g., deck building, framing).

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of professional fence installation experience, with demonstrated ability to lead a small crew and complete complex, custom fence projects from start to finish.
