As a Fence Laborer, you are the backbone of our installation crews. You will be instrumental in transforming properties by constructing high-quality fences that provide security, privacy, and aesthetic value. This is a hands-on role where you will work closely with a team of experienced installers and foremen, learning the trade from the ground up. You will be responsible for site preparation, material handling, and the fundamental tasks of fence assembly. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete installation process for various types of fencing, including wood, vinyl (PVC), chain-link, aluminum, and composite materials.
  • Precisely measure and lay out fence lines according to project plans, blueprints, and property surveys.
  • Operate power-driven augers and other digging equipment to excavate post holes to specified depths and diameters.
  • Accurately mix and pour concrete into post holes, ensuring a stable and secure foundation for the fence structure.
  • Set fence posts in concrete, meticulously aligning them for plumb and height using levels, string lines, and other measurement tools.
  • Attach fence rails, pickets, and panels between posts, using a variety of fasteners and power tools such as nail guns, screw guns, and drills.
  • Perform the assembly and installation of gates, ensuring proper swing, alignment, and functionality of latches and hardware.
  • Stretch and secure chain-link or wire mesh fencing, ensuring proper tension and a professional finish.
  • Cut and shape fencing materials to size using saws, cutters, and other fabrication tools, adhering to precise project specifications.
  • Operate light to medium construction machinery, such as skid steers or mini-excavators, for material transport and site preparation.
  • Prepare job sites for installation by clearing vegetation, grading the ground, and removing obstacles to ensure a smooth workflow.
  • Handle and transport heavy materials, including bags of concrete, fence panels, and steel posts, both manually and with equipment.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine inspection, cleaning, and basic maintenance of all hand tools, power tools, and installation equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site at all times by removing debris, organizing materials, and adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Load and unload trucks with materials, tools, and equipment at the start and end of each workday, ensuring everything is secure for transport.
  • Assist the crew leader with inventory management and reporting of materials used on-site.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with team members to ensure coordinated effort and high-quality outcomes.
  • Interact courteously with clients on-site, answering basic questions when appropriate and directing more complex inquiries to the foreman.
  • Actively participate in daily safety briefings (tailgate talks) and consistently utilize personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist in performing minor repairs and adjustments to existing fences as directed by the crew leader.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Tool Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively operate common hand tools (hammers, shovels, levels) and power tools (drills, circular saws, augers, nail guns).
  • Accurate Measurement: Strong ability to read a tape measure, use levels, and perform basic mathematical calculations for cuts and layouts.
  • Material Handling: Experience and physical capability to handle various construction materials, including wood, steel, vinyl, and concrete.
  • Equipment Operation: Basic knowledge of or willingness to be trained on light construction equipment like skid steers is a significant plus.
  • Valid Driver's License: A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is often required for travel to various job sites.

  • Physical Stamina & Strength: Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods, including lifting 50-80 lbs regularly, bending, and digging.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of experience in an outdoor general labor, landscaping, or construction-related role.
