Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Execute safe and efficient navigation of the vessel by all available means, maintaining a continuous watch on the bridge and adhering to the planned passage.
- Oversee and direct the safe and orderly loading, stowing, and unloading of vehicles, passengers, and any accompanying cargo, ensuring vessel stability is maintained at all times.
- Act as the designated officer in charge of a navigational watch, utilizing RADAR/ARPA, ECDIS, GPS, and other bridge equipment to maintain situational awareness.
- Implement and enforce the company's Safety Management System (SMS) and ensure full compliance with international (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW) and local maritime regulations.
- Supervise, train, and manage the deck crew, assigning duties for maintenance, watches, mooring operations, and emergency preparedness.
- Conduct regular and thorough inspections and maintenance of all lifesaving appliances (LSA) and firefighting equipment (FFA) to ensure they are in a constant state of readiness.
- Maintain accurate and official vessel logs, including the Deck Log Book, GMDSS Radio Log, and Oil Record Book, as required by law and company policy.
- Direct mooring and anchoring operations, ensuring the vessel is safely and securely berthed or anchored in all conditions.
- Monitor and interpret weather forecasts and navigational warnings, making necessary adjustments to the route plan in consultation with the Master.
- Serve as the vessel's designated Safety Officer or Medical Officer, leading safety meetings and providing first aid and medical care as needed.
- Manage all external communications, including VHF radio traffic with other vessels, VTS, and port authorities.
- Oversee all aspects of garbage management and environmental compliance on deck, ensuring no illegal discharge of pollutants occurs.
- Assist the Master in vessel maneuvering during arrivals, departures, and navigating in confined waters.
- Coordinate and lead regular safety drills, including fire, man overboard, and abandon ship scenarios, ensuring all crew and passengers are familiar with emergency procedures.
- Assume command of the vessel in the absence or incapacitation of the Master and Chief Mate, as per the chain of command.
- Ensure the vessel's security plan is implemented, controlling access to restricted areas and maintaining a vigilant watch for security threats.
- Address passenger inquiries and concerns with professionalism, acting as a visible and approachable representative of the vessel's command.
- Manage the inventory and requisition of deck stores, maintenance supplies, and navigational charts and publications.
- Conduct pre-departure and pre-arrival checklists to verify the vessel's readiness for sea and for docking.
- Play a lead role in the vessel's emergency response team, directing crew and coordinating actions during any incident.
- Ensure all flag state, port state, and classification society requirements are met and that all relevant certificates are valid.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Vessel Handling & Maneuvering: Proven ability to handle a vessel of similar size and propulsion type, particularly in close-quarters situations and heavy traffic.
- ECDIS Operation: Type-specific certification and proficiency in using Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems for passage planning and navigation.
- Radar/ARPA Proficiency: Expert-level skill in the use of Radar and Automatic Radar Plotting Aids for collision avoidance.
- GMDSS Operation: Valid GMDSS General Operator's Certificate (GOC) for managing maritime communications.

Experience Requirements
