Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform continuous on-site observation of work in progress, verifying that all activities and materials conform to the approved project plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Prepare comprehensive and accurate daily field reports detailing contractor activities, site conditions, labor and equipment usage, quantity of materials used, and specific observations.
  • Conduct field testing on construction materials such as soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates using specialized equipment to ensure they meet project quality standards.
  • Collect environmental samples (e.g., water, soil, air) following strict protocols and chain-of-custody procedures for laboratory analysis.
  • Document and report any deviations from the project specifications or potential non-conformance issues to the Project Manager and engineering team for timely resolution.
  • Maintain a detailed photographic log of project progress, critical installations, and any identified issues to supplement written reports.
  • Review and interpret construction blueprints, shop drawings, and other technical documents to ensure proper implementation in the field.
  • Monitor and document contractor adherence to safety regulations and site-specific health and safety plans, immediately reporting any unsafe conditions or practices.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot field testing and monitoring equipment to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of collected data.
  • Act as a primary point of contact on-site, effectively communicating with contractors, superintendents, and other stakeholders to facilitate project coordination.
  • Measure and record quantities of completed work to assist in the verification of contractor pay applications and project progress payments.
  • Observe and document utility installations, earthwork operations, and foundation construction to ensure compliance with geotechnical and civil engineering requirements.
  • Perform inspections of erosion and sediment control measures to ensure environmental compliance throughout the duration of the project.
  • Assist in the coordination of third-party special inspections and materials testing services, reviewing their reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Utilize GPS and other survey equipment to verify layout, location, and elevation of site features and construction elements.
  • Attend and actively participate in pre-construction meetings, progress meetings, and safety briefings to stay informed of project objectives and challenges.
  • Document all field instructions, clarifications, and changes issued to the contractor to maintain an accurate record of project modifications.
  • Monitor weather conditions and their potential impact on construction activities and material placement, documenting any delays or necessary adjustments.
  • Conduct final punch list inspections with the project team to identify any remaining deficiencies or incomplete work prior to project closeout.
  • Maintain organized and accessible project files, including all field notes, test results, reports, and correspondence, for the official project record.
  • Observe and verify the installation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems to ensure they align with design specifications.
  • Investigate and document unforeseen site conditions or conflicts, providing detailed information to the design team for analysis and resolution.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-5 years of experience in construction inspection, materials testing, or a related field role.

Current certifications such as ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I, NICET, or relevant state DOT qualifications are highly desirable.
