Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct, manage, and coordinate all on-site construction activities and trade contractors from project inception through final punch-list and closeout.
  • Develop, maintain, and drive the master project schedule, implementing short-term (e.g., three-week look-ahead) schedules to ensure milestones are met and the project remains on track.
  • Enforce a culture of safety by implementing and rigorously monitoring compliance with all company and OSHA safety policies, conducting daily safety huddles and weekly toolbox talks.
  • Serve as the primary on-site authority for all quality control and assurance, meticulously inspecting work to ensure it complies with contract documents, plans, and specifications.
  • Supervise and coordinate all subcontractor activities, resolving conflicts, managing workflow, and ensuring adequate manpower and resources are available on a daily basis.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate daily project logs, documenting weather conditions, work performed, manpower, equipment usage, and significant events.
  • Proactively identify and resolve field issues, constructability problems, and design discrepancies by collaborating with Project Managers, Engineers, and Architects.
  • Manage the Request for Information (RFI) and submittal process from the field, ensuring timely responses and distribution of information to all relevant parties.
  • Oversee all site logistics, including material deliveries, staging, laydown areas, site security, and temporary utilities to maintain an efficient and organized job site.
  • Conduct and lead regular subcontractor coordination meetings to review safety, scheduling, and project progress, ensuring clear communication and alignment.
  • Interpret and explain complex construction drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to foremen, craft workers, and other field personnel.
  • Manage the project punch list process from creation to completion, ensuring all deficiencies are corrected promptly and to the client's satisfaction.
  • Act as the primary on-site point of contact for the client, owner's representative, and design team, fostering positive relationships through professional and consistent communication.
  • Assist the Project Manager in evaluating and implementing change orders, assessing their impact on the schedule and coordinating the execution of new work.
  • Champion a clean and orderly job site, directing regular cleanup and waste removal efforts to maintain a safe and professional environment.
  • Monitor and manage the utilization of company-owned or rented equipment, ensuring it is operated safely and maintained properly.
  • Conduct thorough site investigations and pre-construction planning to identify potential risks and logistical challenges before work commences.
  • Prepare and submit various field reports, including progress photos, incident reports, and weekly summaries, to keep the project management team informed.
  • Mentor and develop junior field staff, such as Assistant Superintendents and Project Engineers, by providing guidance, training, and constructive feedback.
  • Coordinate and witness all required jurisdictional inspections, testing, and commissioning activities, ensuring all approvals are obtained without causing delays.
  • Review and understand project budgets and cost codes, ensuring field activities are managed in a cost-effective manner.

  • Participate in the project buyout process by providing input on subcontractor qualifications and scope of work.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint & Specification Interpretation: Deep expertise in reading and understanding all construction documents, including architectural, structural, MEP, and civil drawings.
  • Construction Scheduling: Proficiency with scheduling software such as Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or Procore's scheduling tool to create and manage complex project timelines.
  • Safety Management & OSHA Certification: Must possess an OSHA 30 certification with a comprehensive understanding of federal and local safety regulations.
  • Construction Management Software: Hands-on experience with platforms like Procore, PlanGrid, or Autodesk Build for daily logs, RFIs, and document management.
  • Quality Control & Assurance: In-depth knowledge of building science, installation means and methods, and quality inspection protocols.
  • Subcontractor & Crew Management: Proven ability to effectively direct and coordinate the work of multiple trades and field personnel simultaneously.
  • Cost Awareness: Understanding of project cost codes and the ability to manage field activities to align with budget constraints.
  • RFI, Submittal & Change Order Process: Expertise in managing the flow of critical project information and documenting changes effectively.
  • Knowledge of Building Codes: Strong working knowledge of local, state, and national building codes and inspection requirements.
  • Site Layout & Control: Familiarity with basic surveying techniques for verifying layout, grades, and elevations.
  • First Aid / CPR Certification: Current certification is highly preferred and often required.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by extensive field experience.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Building Science, or a related discipline.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

A minimum of 5-10 years of progressive experience in the construction industry, with at least 3-5 years in a direct supervisory capacity (e.g., Foreman, Assistant Superintendent) on commercial, industrial, or large-scale residential projects.

Preferred:

Demonstrated experience as the lead Superintendent on projects valued over $10 million. Experience in specialized sectors such as healthcare, data centers, life sciences, or high-rise construction is highly desirable.
