Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive on-site data and sample collection, including soil, water, air, and material samples, ensuring strict adherence to established chain-of-custody and quality assurance protocols.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain a variety of technical field equipment, such as GPS units, environmental monitoring sensors, water quality meters, and handheld data collection devices.
  • Perform routine site inspections and monitoring activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, environmental regulations, and safety guidelines.
  • Execute general labor tasks as required, which may include site setup, excavation, system installation, vegetation management, and site restoration activities.
  • Diligently document all field activities, observations, and data collected in detailed field logs, electronic forms, and daily progress reports.
  • Adhere to and actively promote all company and client-specific Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) policies, including participating in daily safety briefings and identifying potential hazards.
  • Navigate to and from various, often remote, project sites using maps and GPS, operating a company vehicle in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Assist with the mobilization and demobilization of project equipment and materials, ensuring all resources are accounted for and properly stored.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve minor operational and equipment issues in the field, communicating larger problems to the Field Supervisor for resolution.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with crew members, supervisors, clients, and subcontractors to ensure seamless project coordination.
  • Interpret project plans, blueprints, and site maps to accurately execute fieldwork and locate specific points of interest for testing or installation.
  • Perform regular maintenance and safety checks on assigned vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure operational readiness and safety.
  • Install, monitor, and maintain field instrumentation and environmental remediation or monitoring systems according to engineering designs.
  • Work in a variety of physically demanding conditions, including inclement weather, challenging terrain, and confined spaces, while wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Support environmental drilling, soil boring, and well installation activities by handling materials, decontaminating equipment, and logging subsurface conditions.
  • Prepare and package samples for laboratory shipment, completing all necessary documentation to ensure sample integrity and traceability.
  • Utilize mobile applications and software to log work hours, record data, and communicate project status updates in real-time.
  • Respond to emergency call-outs or changing project schedules, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to work extended hours, weekends, or travel as needed.
  • Manage and maintain an inventory of field supplies and tools, ensuring that all necessary items are available and in good working order for daily tasks.
  • Provide clear, concise updates on project progress, challenges, and site conditions during daily debriefs with the project management team.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with the organization and cleaning of company vehicles, storage facilities, and equipment yards.
  • Participate actively in daily safety meetings ("tailgate talks") and contribute to a positive and proactive safety culture.
  • Provide logistical support for new projects, including preparing equipment kits and organizing necessary field supplies.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job guidance to junior team members or new hires on standard field procedures and safety protocols.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Field Data Collection: Proficiency in using GPS devices, tablets, and specialized software for accurate data logging and reporting.
  • Equipment Operation: Experience operating and maintaining field equipment, such as pumps, generators, environmental sensors, and basic hand/power tools.
  • Technical Procedures: Ability to read and interpret technical documents, project plans, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Safety Compliance (OSHA): Knowledge of fundamental worksite safety protocols; OSHA 10 or 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification is a significant plus.
  • Basic Mechanical Aptitude: Skill in performing routine vehicle and equipment checks and minor troubleshooting/maintenance.
  • Sample Collection: Familiarity with proper techniques for collecting environmental samples (soil, water, air) while maintaining sample integrity.
  • Driving & Navigation: A valid driver's license with a clean driving record and the ability to navigate to remote locations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree, Technical/Vocational Certificate, or some college coursework.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years of experience in a field-based or labor-intensive role.

Preferred: 1+ years of demonstrated experience in construction, environmental fieldwork, landscaping, agriculture, or a related industry is highly desirable. Experience working outdoors in a team setting will be a strong asset.
