Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Maintain a wide variety of specific, and often physically challenging, nude, semi-nude, or costumed poses for extended durations, ranging from 30-second gestures to multi-hour sustained poses.
  • Collaborate directly with course instructors to understand the artistic and pedagogical goals of each session, adapting poses to meet specific learning objectives such as anatomy, foreshortening, or lighting.
  • Demonstrate exceptional punctuality and reliability, arriving for all scheduled sessions well in advance, warmed up, and fully prepared to begin at the designated start time.
  • Exhibit a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and composure, maintaining a quiet and focused environment conducive to artistic concentration.
  • Hold poses with absolute stillness, avoiding fidgeting or drifting, which requires significant physical control and mental discipline.
  • Interpret and respond to verbal and gestural instructions from faculty to make subtle or significant adjustments to a pose.
  • Creatively and intuitively generate a broad vocabulary of dynamic and anatomically interesting poses, including standing, seated, reclining, and contorted positions.

  • Ensure pose consistency for multi-session artworks, skillfully resuming the exact pose after breaks by using visual markers and muscle memory.
  • Maintain a professional and non-personal demeanor, understanding that you are being observed for academic and artistic purposes.
  • Independently manage personal logistics, including bringing a robe and appropriate footwear for use during breaks and transitions.
  • Efficiently transition between poses and manage break times to maximize the working time available to the artists.
  • Possess and apply a functional understanding of human anatomy, balance, and weight distribution to create poses that are both sustainable and visually compelling.
  • Develop poses that are interesting and readable from a 360-degree viewpoint to serve all students in the studio.
  • Adhere strictly to all institutional policies, studio etiquette, and safety protocols, fostering a secure and respectful environment for everyone.
  • Communicate proactively and professionally with the model coordinator or faculty regarding scheduling, availability, and any physical limitations.
  • Be prepared to work with a variety of props, fabrics, or specific lighting conditions as required by the curriculum.
  • Accurately resume a long-term pose after 15-20 minute breaks, demonstrating strong spatial awareness and physical memory.
  • Maintain a level of physical fitness and well-being that allows for the reliable execution of the strenuous physical demands of the role.
  • Provide your own modest covering, such as a bathrobe, to be worn during breaks and when not actively posing.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist faculty with minor adjustments to the modeling stand, lighting, or background setup as needed.
  • Contribute to a positive and focused studio atmosphere through a silent, professional presence.
  • Manage and communicate your own physical needs, such as the need for a modification or unscheduled break, in a clear and professional manner.
  • Participate in orientation or training sessions regarding studio policy and posing techniques.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Fine Arts or Art History
  • Dance (Ballet, Modern, Contemporary)
  • Theater Arts or Mime
  • Kinesiology, Yoga, or Pilates

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 5+ years.

While prior experience is not always mandatory for entry-level opportunities, it is highly preferred. We encourage individuals with a strong physical practice (like dance or yoga) and a professional attitude to apply.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrable experience as a figure model for university-level fine arts classes, private workshops, or professional artists.
  • A portfolio or list of references from art instructors or artists is a significant asset.
