Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Interpret and execute complex construction projects based on blueprints, scale models, and verbal instructions provided by the Production Designer and Art Director.
- Construct, assemble, and install a wide variety of set pieces, including walls (flats), platforms, staircases, wild walls, and custom architectural features, ensuring structural integrity and on-set safety.
- Perform high-level, skilled carpentry and joinery using a full range of hand tools, power tools (saws, routers, sanders), and specialized workshop machinery.
- Fabricate bespoke props, set dressing elements, and furniture from a diverse array of materials including wood, metal, plastics, foam, and composites.
- Apply various scenic treatments and finishing techniques, such as texturing, plastering, painting, aging, and distressing, to achieve the specific look and historical period required by the design.
- Safely operate heavy-duty workshop equipment including table saws, panel saws, band saws, miter saws, lathes, and welding equipment in accordance with all safety protocols.
- Read and accurately interpret technical drawings, schematics, and design specifications to ensure precise and high-quality fabrication of all scenic elements.
- Assemble, install, and strike (disassemble) sets efficiently on sound stages and on-location, adapting to changing environmental and logistical challenges.
- Perform on-the-spot repairs and modifications to sets and props as creative needs evolve or as required during the fast-paced shooting schedule.
- Execute basic to intermediate metalworking tasks, including cutting, grinding, and welding (MIG/TIG), to create structural frameworks, armatures, or specific design elements.
- Sculpt and shape materials like expanded polystyrene (EPS foam) and plastics to create organic shapes, rockwork, fantasy architecture, or other non-traditional structures.
- Ensure all constructed elements are "camera-ready," paying meticulous attention to detail, finish quality, and the way the piece will be read by the camera lens.
- Rig and secure heavy or complex scenic elements for on-set use, ensuring they are completely safe for interaction by actors and crew.
Secondary Functions
- Collaborate proactively with the Art Department team, including Production Designers, Art Directors, and Set Decorators, to troubleshoot design challenges and offer practical construction solutions.
