Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Compose, orchestrate, and produce compelling, original musical scores that enhance the narrative, emotional depth, and overall atmosphere of feature films, television series, and other visual media projects.
  • Collaborate closely with directors, producers, and editors during spotting sessions to determine the precise placement, style, and emotional function of music cues throughout the project.
  • Interpret creative briefs and abstract feedback from the creative team to translate narrative and emotional ideas into concrete musical themes, motifs, and soundscapes.
  • Develop a unique and cohesive sonic palette and musical language that is consistent with the project's genre, tone, period, and artistic vision.
  • Create and present high-quality mock-ups and demos of cues using virtual instruments and sample libraries for review and approval by the director and producers.
  • Manage the entire composition and production timeline, delivering finished cues on a strict post-production schedule, often under significant time pressure.
  • Revise and iterate on musical cues based on detailed feedback and picture edits, maintaining a flexible and collaborative attitude throughout the revision process.
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of live recording sessions, including hiring and contracting musicians, booking studio time, and preparing professional scores and parts.
  • Conduct or supervise the conducting of live musicians and orchestras during recording sessions to ensure a performance that aligns with the creative vision.
  • Supervise the music editing process to ensure cues are perfectly synced to picture, hit all required dramatic timings, and transition smoothly.
    or- Engineer and mix musical cues to a professional standard, preparing and delivering final stems and mixes in the required technical formats (e.g., 5.1 surround, stereo).
  • Manage the music budget effectively, tracking costs for musicians, studio time, orchestration, copying, and other music-related expenses to stay within financial constraints.
  • Research and integrate culturally or historically appropriate musical styles, instrumentation, and tonalities for period pieces or geographically specific stories.
  • Stay current with the latest music production technology, including DAWs, virtual instruments, plugins, and mixing techniques, to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Create a library of thematic material and character motifs that can be developed, varied, and deployed throughout the film to support a cohesive narrative.
  • Collaborate with the sound design department to ensure the musical score and sound effects work together harmoniously to create a unified and impactful final audio mix.
  • Prepare and deliver all necessary documentation, including cue sheets and other paperwork required by PROs (Performance Rights Organizations) like ASCAP or BMI.
  • Work with music supervisors to integrate licensed songs seamlessly with the original score, sometimes creating transitions or arrangements to bridge the two.
  • Produce alternate versions of key cues (e.g., shorter, extended, underscore-only) for editorial flexibility and for use in trailers and promotional materials.
  • Archive and maintain all project files, sessions, and recorded audio meticulously for potential future use in sequels, soundtracks, or special editions.
  • Participate in the final dubbing/mixing stage, representing the music department and making real-time adjustments as the score is blended with dialogue and sound effects.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the music editing and sound design teams with specific musical stems, mock-ups, and temp track replacements.
  • Contribute to the strategic selection and licensing of commercial music when required, in collaboration with the Music Supervisor.
  • Collaborate with marketing and promotions departments to provide music for trailers, teasers, and other promotional materials.
  • Participate in creative team meetings, table reads, and dailies review sessions to stay deeply integrated with the project's evolution.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mastery of at least one primary Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as Logic Pro X, Cubase, Pro Tools, or Digital Performer.
  • Advanced knowledge of music theory, harmony, counterpoint, and traditional/contemporary orchestration for a wide range of ensembles.
  • Proficiency with MIDI sequencing, virtual instruments (e.g., Kontakt, Spitfire Audio, EastWest), and sophisticated sample library management.
  • Expertise in music notation software like Sibelius or Finale for creating professional, error-free scores and parts for live musicians.
  • Solid understanding of audio engineering principles, including recording, mixing, and mastering to deliver polished, broadcast-quality audio files.
  • Ability to sync music to picture with frame-accurate precision and manage tempo maps, time-code, and hit points effectively.
  • Knowledge of audio file formats, stem delivery requirements, and post-production audio workflows.
  • Experience in setting up and troubleshooting complex studio hardware, including audio interfaces, MIDI controllers, and monitoring systems.
  • Familiarity with the music licensing process and the function of Performance Rights Organizations (PROs).

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
