Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Analyze scripts, character descriptions, and director's notes to design and conceptualize comprehensive makeup looks for all cast members.
  • Skillfully apply a wide range of makeup, from basic corrective and beauty applications to complex character and period-specific styles.
  • Create and apply realistic special effects makeup, including the simulation of injuries such as cuts, bruises, scars, burns, and other physical trauma.
  • Expertly apply, blend, paint, and maintain pre-made or custom-fit prosthetic pieces to create non-human characters, aging effects, or significant physical alterations.
  • Meticulously maintain makeup continuity for all actors throughout the duration of the shoot, performing touch-ups between takes and scenes to ensure visual consistency.
  • Conduct in-depth historical and cultural research to ensure the authenticity of makeup styles for period films or culturally specific characters.
  • Collaborate creatively with the Director, Director of Photography, and Costume Designer to ensure a cohesive and unified visual style across all departments.
  • Perform detailed character breakdowns from the script to accurately forecast makeup requirements, timelines, and resources needed for each scene and character.
  • Organize and conduct makeup tests and camera tests with actors prior to principal photography to finalize looks and gain director approval.
  • Design, sculpt, mold, and cast custom prosthetic appliances and other special effects elements when required for unique character designs.
  • Maintain a highly organized, clean, and sanitary makeup kit, station, and trailer, strictly adhering to all health and safety regulations.
  • Safely and gently remove all makeup, prosthetics, and adhesives from actors at the end of each shooting day, paying close attention to skin care.
  • Document every finalized makeup look with detailed photographs and written notes for the "makeup bible" to ensure perfect continuity for reshoots or subsequent shooting days.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with actors, ensuring their comfort, addressing any skin sensitivities or allergies, and building a trusting on-set relationship.
  • Supervise, train, and delegate tasks to junior makeup artists, trainees, and assistants within the makeup department.
  • Manage the departmental budget effectively, sourcing and purchasing all necessary makeup products, tools, prosthetics, and disposables within financial constraints.
  • Prepare actors for set by applying makeup in a timely and efficient manner, ensuring they are ready for their scheduled call times.

Secondary Functions

  • Prepare and maintain a detailed inventory of all makeup products, tools, and expendables, placing orders to replenish stock as needed.
  • Break down the script from a logistical perspective to create a detailed makeup schedule and budget proposal for producers and production managers.
  • Attend pre-production meetings and technical scouts to provide input on makeup requirements and potential challenges.
  • Collaborate with the hair and wig department to ensure a seamless transition between makeup and hairstyling, sometimes assisting with minor hair tasks.
  • Stay current with the latest industry trends, advanced techniques, new product formulations, and innovations in special effects technology.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Prosthetic Application: Expertise in the application, blending, coloring, and safe removal of foam latex, silicone, and gelatin prosthetics.
  • Special Effects (SFX) Mastery: Proficiency in creating realistic injuries, aging effects, disease symptoms, and other trauma using a variety of materials like wax, latex, and blood products.
  • Airbrushing Technique: Advanced skill in using an airbrush for flawless foundation application, body makeup, tattoo coverage, and subtle character effects.
  • Period & Character Makeup: Deep knowledge of historical makeup trends and the ability to create authentic character looks from different eras and genres.
  • Color Theory & Lighting: Strong understanding of how different lighting setups and camera lenses affect makeup's appearance on screen.
  • Sculpting and Molding: Proven ability to sculpt, mold, and cast custom prosthetics and effects pieces from scratch.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certificate or Diploma from a recognized professional makeup artistry school or program.

Preferred Education:

  • Advanced certification or specialized workshops in special effects (SFX), prosthetics, airbrushing, or character makeup.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
3-10+ years of documented professional experience on film, television, or major theatrical productions.

Preferred:
A comprehensive and diverse portfolio or demo reel that showcases a wide range of skills, including beauty, character, period, and special effects makeup on professional projects. Prior experience as a Department Head or Key Makeup Artist on a feature film or television series is highly advantageous. Must be eligible for or a current member of the relevant local industry union (e.g., IATSE).
