Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Analyze and evaluate the financial health and risk profile of new and renewal business submissions for various Financial Lines products, including Directors & Officers (D&O), Employment Practices Liability (EPL), Fiduciary Liability, Crime, and Errors & Omissions (E&O).
- Develop, negotiate, and authorize pricing, terms, and conditions for complex accounts based on a thorough assessment of exposure, loss history, and market dynamics.
- Build, maintain, and cultivate strong, profitable relationships with key wholesale and retail brokers, acting as a primary point of contact and trusted advisor.
- Execute strategic underwriting decisions in alignment with the company's risk appetite, profitability goals, and overall portfolio management strategy.
- Prepare and present detailed underwriting proposals, quotes, and binders to brokers in a clear, compelling, and timely manner, effectively articulating our value proposition.
- Actively manage a dedicated book of business, meticulously monitoring performance, profitability, and key metrics to identify trends and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Achieve individual production and profitability goals, including new business targets, renewal retention rates, and overall loss ratio performance.
- Conduct in-depth financial statement analysis, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, to assess an applicant's financial stability and long-term viability.
- Evaluate corporate governance structures, management experience, litigation history, and internal controls as part of a holistic risk assessment process.
- Document the underwriting thought process and rationale for all decisions meticulously within the company’s systems, ensuring a clear and compliant audit trail.
- Review and interpret complex policy language and endorsements to ensure coverage is appropriate for the identified risks and aligns with the agreed-upon terms.
- Stay current on market trends, the competitive landscape, industry developments, and emerging risks within the Financial Lines space to inform underwriting strategy and identify new opportunities.
- Participate actively in broker meetings, client presentations, and industry events to promote the company's brand, products, and underwriting capabilities.
Secondary Functions
- Collaborate with senior underwriters, management, and other internal stakeholders (such as Actuarial, Claims, and Legal) on large or complex accounts that require higher authority or specialized review.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior underwriters or underwriting assistants, assisting with their training and professional development.
- Work closely with the claims department to understand loss trends and apply insights from claims activity to future underwriting decisions and portfolio management.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of underwriting guidelines, procedures, and product offerings to adapt to changing market conditions.
- Support portfolio-level analysis and reporting for senior management, providing insights into the book's composition, performance, and strategic positioning.
- Proactively identify and pursue cross-selling opportunities for other lines of business within the organization to deepen client relationships.
