Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, wire, and program a wide range of fire alarm systems, including addressable, conventional, and networked configurations, in accordance with engineering designs and manufacturer specifications.
  • Read and meticulously interpret blueprints, riser diagrams, wiring schematics, and other technical documents to ensure accurate placement and connection of all system components.
  • Mount and terminate all system devices, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual pull stations, horn/strobes, speakers, and other notification appliances.
  • Install and configure fire alarm control panels (FACPs), power supplies, annunciators, and associated modules, ensuring proper power and communication pathways.
  • Run, terminate, and test low-voltage cabling (FPLP, FPLR) through conduit, raceways, walls, and ceilings while adhering to proper support, separation, and code requirements.
  • Perform system programming and commissioning, including setting device addresses, configuring logic, and establishing communication links for monitoring.
  • Conduct comprehensive system testing and verification to ensure all components and circuits function correctly, documenting all results with precision.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose complex installation issues, including ground faults, short circuits, open circuits, and communication errors using diagnostic tools.
  • Interface directly with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), such as fire marshals and building inspectors, to conduct final acceptance testing and secure project sign-off.
  • Perform battery load calculations and voltage drop calculations to ensure system survivability and performance during power failure events.
  • Complete and submit all required project documentation, including as-built drawings, test reports, commissioning forms, and daily work logs.
  • Manage on-site inventory, ensuring all necessary materials, components, and tools are available to maintain project schedules and efficiency.
  • Provide clear and thorough end-user training to facility managers or building owners on the proper operation, monitoring, and basic maintenance of the newly installed system.
  • Adhere strictly to all relevant life safety codes and standards, including NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) and NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code).
  • Collaborate effectively with project managers, electricians, and other construction trades to coordinate installation schedules and resolve on-site conflicts.
  • Utilize specialized tools such as multimeters, cable testers, toners, and decibel meters to verify circuit integrity and system performance.
  • Install and configure digital alarm communicator transmitters (DACTs) and IP/Cellular communicators for reliable central station monitoring services.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area on every job site, strictly following all company and OSHA safety protocols.
  • Perform terminations within control panels, junction boxes, and field devices with a high degree of precision and quality.
  • Participate in and lead job site safety briefings to promote a culture of safety awareness among the installation team.

Secondary Functions

  • Support service technicians with advanced troubleshooting or system repairs on an as-needed basis.
  • Participate in ongoing manufacturer and industry certification training to stay current with new products, technologies, and code updates.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training for apprentice-level installers, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Prepare and submit accurate timesheets, work orders, and expense reports in a timely manner.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: Deep proficiency in reading and understanding complex fire alarm blueprints, riser diagrams, and wiring schematics.
  • NFPA Code Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of NFPA 72, NFPA 70 (NEC), and local building/fire codes.
  • System Programming: Hands-on experience programming and commissioning fire alarm control panels from major manufacturers (e.g., Notifier, Silent Knight, Fire-Lite, Simplex, EST, Gamewell-FCI).
  • Low-Voltage Wiring: Expertise in installing, terminating, and testing various types of low-voltage fire alarm cabling.
  • Diagnostic Tool Proficiency: Skilled in using multimeters, insulation testers, toners, and other electronic diagnostic tools for troubleshooting.
  • Licensing/Certification: Possession of a state or local Fire Alarm License (FAL) or NICET certification (Level I or II) is highly desired.
  • Addressable & Conventional Systems: In-depth understanding of the architecture and installation requirements for both addressable and conventional fire alarm systems.
  • Pathway Installation: Competency in installing conduit, raceways, and J-hooks according to code.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or Technical School Certificate in Electronics Technology, Electrical Construction, or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5 years of direct, hands-on experience in the installation of commercial fire alarm systems.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of dedicated fire alarm installation experience, holding a NICET Level II (or higher) certification in Fire Alarm Systems, and/or factory certifications from major manufacturers.
