Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Execute the complete installation of new fire alarm systems, including mounting panels, running conduit and wiring, and installing initiating devices (smoke detectors, pull stations) and notification appliances (horns, strobes).
Perform regularly scheduled inspections, testing, and maintenance (ITM) on a variety of fire alarm and life safety systems in accordance with NFPA standards and local codes.
Accurately diagnose and troubleshoot complex system malfunctions, including ground faults, open circuits, and device failures, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools and multimeters.
Program and configure fire alarm control panels (FACPs) and system software from various manufacturers such as Notifier, Simplex, Edwards, and EST.
Read and interpret complex blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to ensure accurate installation and service.
Conduct thorough system verification and commissioning processes to ensure all components function according to design specifications and code requirements.
Perform necessary repairs and replacements of defective system components, from field devices to control panel circuit boards.
Manage on-site project execution, coordinating with other trades, and ensuring work is completed on schedule and within budget.
Provide on-call emergency service support as part of a rotational schedule, responding to urgent client needs outside of normal business hours.
Perform battery load calculations and conduct tests to ensure the reliability of system backup power supplies.
Verify proper communication between fire alarm systems and central monitoring stations, troubleshooting any connectivity issues.
Conduct functional performance tests on integrated systems, such as elevator recall, door holder release, and HVAC shutdowns.
Prepare and submit detailed, accurate electronic service reports, inspection forms, and deficiency logs in a timely manner.
Interface directly with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), including fire marshals and building inspectors, during system acceptance testing.

Secondary Functions

Educate clients and end-users on the proper operation of their life safety systems, providing clear and concise training after installation or service.
Proactively identify and recommend system upgrades, enhancements, or necessary repairs to clients, explaining the benefits and compliance requirements.
Maintain a professional and organized company vehicle, ensuring it is well-stocked with necessary parts, tools, and safety equipment.
Mentor and provide guidance to apprentice technicians, sharing knowledge of code, installation techniques, and best practices.
Attend regular training sessions to stay current with new technologies, manufacturer products, and updates to NFPA codes and industry standards.
Maintain a safe and clean work environment at all times, adhering to all company and OSHA safety policies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Deep understanding of NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) and NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code).
Proficiency in troubleshooting low-voltage electrical systems, including identifying shorts, opens, and ground faults.
Experience programming and servicing fire alarm control panels from major manufacturers (e.g., Notifier, SimplexGrinnell, Honeywell, Siemens, Edwards/EST).
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, riser diagrams, and electrical schematics.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-7 years of direct, hands-on experience in the fire alarm or a closely related low-voltage industry.

3+ years of experience specifically in the commercial fire alarm sector, covering installation, service, and inspections.
Verifiable experience leading small installation projects or acting as a primary service technician for key accounts.
Active NICET II certification in Fire Alarm Systems is strongly preferred.
