Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough on-site inspections, testing, and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers in strict accordance with NFPA 10 standards and all applicable state and local fire codes.
  • Perform annual maintenance, 6-year maintenance teardowns, and 12-year hydrostatic testing on various types of extinguisher cylinders (ABC, CO2, Water, Class K, Class D).
  • Accurately and efficiently recharge, repair, and replace fire extinguishers and their components, including gauges, valves, hoses, and nozzles.
  • Meticulously complete and submit detailed electronic and/or paper inspection reports on a daily basis, clearly documenting all services performed, deficiencies found, and recommendations for corrective action.
  • Professionally install new fire extinguishers, cabinets, and appropriate safety signage at customer locations, ensuring proper placement and accessibility according to code requirements.
  • Manage and maintain an accurate inventory of parts, supplies, and new equipment on a company-provided service vehicle to ensure readiness for all scheduled and emergency service calls.
  • Operate a company vehicle safely and courteously, adhering to all traffic laws and maintaining a clean and organized mobile workspace.
  • Educate customers on the proper use of their fire extinguishers, explain the services performed, and answer any questions related to fire safety and compliance.
  • Identify opportunities for system upgrades, new equipment sales, or additional services and effectively communicate these value-added solutions to clients to enhance their overall safety posture.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctioning fire extinguishers and related equipment to determine the root cause of issues and implement effective repairs.
  • Adhere to all company safety protocols and procedures, utilizing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure a safe work environment for yourself, clients, and the public.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service, building strong relationships with clients and representing the company as a trusted safety partner.
  • Perform hydrostatic testing of high-pressure cylinders in a certified shop environment, following all DOT regulations and safety guidelines.
  • Ensure all work tags and service collars are correctly filled out and attached to the serviced equipment, providing a clear record of maintenance history.
  • Coordinate with the scheduling and dispatch team to optimize daily service routes, maximize efficiency, and respond to urgent customer needs.
  • Stay current with changes in fire codes, industry standards, new products, and service techniques through continuous training and professional development.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized shop environment, including the proper storage and handling of hazardous materials.
  • Survey customer facilities to identify potential fire hazards and ensure adequate extinguisher coverage, providing comprehensive recommendations in a formal report.
  • Respond to emergency service calls outside of normal working hours as part of an on-call rotation schedule when required.
  • Use mobile software applications on a tablet or smartphone to process work orders, manage customer data, and process payments in the field.

  • Assist the service manager in route planning and logistical coordination to enhance operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Provide valuable field-level feedback to management regarding common equipment issues, customer requests, and competitive activity to help shape service strategy.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and routine maintenance of the company-provided service vehicle and all assigned tools and equipment.
  • Participate actively in mandatory safety meetings, technical training sessions, and company-wide forums to foster a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep knowledge of NFPA 10 standards for portable fire extinguishers.
  • Possession of a state-issued Fire Extinguisher License/Certification (or the ability to obtain one shortly after employment).
  • Proficiency in performing hydrostatic testing on various cylinder types in accordance with DOT regulations.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to disassemble, repair, and reassemble mechanical components.
  • Skill in using specialized tools of the trade, including gauges, scales, crimpers, and recharge equipment.
  • Competency using mobile devices (smartphones, tablets) and field service software for reporting and job management.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean, insurable driving record.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, building plans, and fire code documentation.
  • Experience with inventory control and management within a service vehicle.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
1-3 years of direct experience servicing and inspecting fire extinguishers, or 3+ years in a related field service role (e.g., HVAC, security systems, industrial maintenance) with strong mechanical skills.

Preferred:

  • 3+ years of experience as a licensed Fire Extinguisher Technician.
  • Current state-issued Fire Extinguisher certification/license.
  • Experience servicing a wide range of manufacturers' equipment (e.g., Amerex, Ansul, Badger, Buckeye).
  • Documented experience and certification in servicing pre-engineered kitchen and/or industrial fire suppression systems.
