Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assume initial command at fire, rescue, and other emergency incidents, establishing the Incident Command System (ICS) and directing all suppression, rescue, and EMS activities until relieved by a higher-ranking officer.
  • Supervise, lead, and evaluate a team of firefighters during emergency incidents and daily station activities, ensuring strict adherence to departmental policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Develop and implement incident action plans, making rapid tactical decisions regarding apparatus placement, water supply, ventilation, search and rescue operations, and exposure protection.
  • Conduct dynamic risk assessments on the fireground to ensure the safety of all personnel, continuously monitoring fire behavior, building stability, and environmental conditions.
  • Operate and direct the use of complex firefighting apparatus, tools, and specialized equipment, ensuring their proper function and readiness.
  • Provide advanced emergency medical care within the scope of certification (EMT or Paramedic) and oversee the medical response of the assigned crew.
  • Direct and participate in comprehensive post-incident analysis and critiques to identify areas for improvement in tactics, safety, and team performance.
  • Enforce all federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and standards related to fire prevention, public safety, and emergency response.
  • Manage and coordinate multi-company and multi-agency responses, ensuring seamless communication and operational integration with police, EMS, and other mutual aid partners.
  • Conduct regular inspections of assigned fire station, apparatus, and equipment to maintain a constant state of operational readiness and compliance with NFPA standards.
  • Respond to hazardous materials incidents, identifying substances, establishing control zones, and directing containment and mitigation efforts according to established protocols.
  • Lead and perform technical rescue operations, including vehicle extrication, confined space rescue, high-angle rescue, and water rescue, depending on departmental capabilities.

Secondary Functions

  • Plan, schedule, and deliver daily, weekly, and monthly training drills for assigned personnel covering firefighting techniques, medical procedures, equipment operation, and physical fitness.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed and accurate records, including incident reports (NFIRS), training logs, personnel evaluations, station journals, and maintenance requests.
  • Participate in the development and revision of departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines.
  • Manage station administrative duties, including scheduling, payroll timekeeping, supply inventory, and budget tracking for the assigned company.
  • Conduct fire prevention inspections in commercial and residential buildings and lead public education programs on fire safety, CPR, and disaster preparedness.
  • Mentor, coach, and formally evaluate the performance of subordinate personnel, providing constructive feedback and developing performance improvement plans as necessary.
  • Investigate citizen complaints and internal personnel issues at the company level, working to resolve conflicts and maintain a positive and professional work environment.
  • Represent the fire department at community meetings, public events, and inter-agency workgroups to foster positive community relations.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to response times, incident types, and resource deployment.
  • Contribute to the department's strategic planning efforts and participate in committees related to apparatus, equipment, safety, or wellness.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Incident Command System (ICS): Proficiency in establishing and managing ICS (certified in ICS 100, 200, 300, 400) for incidents of varying complexity.
  • Fire Suppression & Tactics: Expert knowledge of modern fire behavior, suppression strategies, building construction, and ventilation techniques.
  • Emergency Medical Care: State or National Registry certification as an EMT or Paramedic with experience in pre-hospital patient care.
  • Hazardous Materials Operations: Certification and demonstrated ability at the Hazardous Materials Operations or Technician level.
  • Technical Rescue Knowledge: In-depth understanding and practical experience in disciplines such as vehicle extrication, rope rescue, and confined space rescue.
  • NFPA Standards: Comprehensive knowledge of relevant National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards (e.g., NFPA 1001, 1021, 1500).
  • Apparatus & Equipment Operation: Skill in operating fire engines, ladder trucks, rescue vehicles, pumps, and various hydraulic and power tools.
  • Report Writing & Record Keeping: Competency in using records management software (RMS) and National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) for accurate documentation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of a state-certified Fire Academy.
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I Certification (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe).

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer II Certification.
  • Completion of advanced leadership training (e.g., National Fire Academy's Managing Officer Program).
