Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively greet and engage customers in a professional and welcoming manner to build rapport and identify their specific hunting, shooting sports, or self-defense needs.
  • Provide expert-level product knowledge and tailored recommendations on a wide range of firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns, to ensure customers make informed purchasing decisions.
  • Meticulously and accurately complete all federal, state, and local paperwork, including the ATF Form 4473 and the NICS background check process, ensuring 100% compliance with all legal requirements.
  • Drive departmental sales by actively listening to customer needs and recommending appropriate firearms, ammunition, optics, holsters, safes, and other relevant accessories.
  • Demonstrate and enforce safe firearm handling procedures at all times, including clearing firearms upon receipt and before returning them to customers, to maintain a secure environment.
  • Maintain a deep and current understanding of all applicable firearm laws, company policies, and ATF regulations, and be able to clearly articulate them to customers.
  • Execute all firearm transactions, including sales, trade-ins, and special orders, with a high degree of accuracy using the Point of Sale (POS) system.
  • Manage and maintain the visual presentation of the gun counter, firearm displays, and surrounding areas, ensuring they are clean, organized, well-stocked, and compliant with merchandising standards.
  • Conduct regular and precise inventory counts of firearms and accessories, assisting with the receiving, logging, and secure storage of new merchandise to prevent loss.
  • Respond to customer inquiries via phone, email, or in-person regarding product availability, specifications, pricing, and special orders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Act as a brand ambassador, promoting a positive image of the company and fostering a community built around safe and responsible firearm ownership.
  • Stay current on new industry trends, competitive landscape, product innovations, and technological advancements within the firearms and outdoor recreation markets.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential customer information with the utmost discretion and professionalism throughout the entire sales and background check process.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and management to achieve departmental sales goals and contribute to a positive, productive, and safe work environment.
  • Perform all opening and closing duties for the firearms department, including the secure transfer of high-value inventory to and from vaults or safes.
  • Educate customers on fundamental firearm safety principles, responsible storage solutions (such as safes and lockboxes), and opportunities for local training and practice.
  • Assist in setting up promotional displays, ensuring accurate signage, and executing planograms to support marketing and sales initiatives.
  • Participate in all mandatory compliance training and continuous education programs to maintain a high level of expertise in legal and operational procedures.
  • Skillfully mount and bore-sight scopes and other optical accessories for customers, ensuring proper installation and function.
  • Resolve customer concerns or complaints with patience and professionalism, escalating issues to management when necessary to ensure a satisfactory outcome.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • In-depth Knowledge of Firearms: Comprehensive understanding of various firearm types (handgun, rifle, shotgun), actions, makes, models, and calibers.
  • ATF Compliance & Regulations: Expertise in federal, state, and local firearm laws, including regulations governing sales and transfers.
  • Form 4473 & NICS Processing: Meticulous and error-free execution of ATF Form 4473 and the NICS background check process.
  • Safe Firearm Handling: Proven ability to safely handle, clear, and demonstrate a wide variety of firearms.
  • Point of Sale (POS) Systems: Proficiency in operating retail POS systems for accurate transaction processing.
  • Inventory Control Systems: Experience with inventory management software for tracking, receiving, and counting stock.
  • Ammunition & Ballistics Knowledge: Strong understanding of ammunition types, calibers, and basic ballistics.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and eligible to possess a firearm in accordance with all federal and state laws.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience in a retail, sales, or customer-facing role.

Preferred:

  • 2+ years of direct experience in firearms sales is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience as a military service member, law enforcement officer, or certified firearms instructor is a significant asset.
  • A demonstrated personal passion for and experience with shooting sports, hunting, or firearm collecting.
