Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and proficiently operate complex, multi-functional firewood processing machinery, managing log decks, cutting saws, and hydraulic splitting systems to consistently produce firewood to specified lengths and sizes.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on all processing equipment, including greasing fittings, checking hydraulic fluid levels, sharpening chains, and replacing worn parts to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct thorough pre-shift and post-shift safety inspections of machinery and the surrounding work area, documenting and immediately reporting any defects, hazards, or potential safety concerns.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve minor mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical issues with the processing equipment to maintain operational flow and reduce the need for specialized technicians.
  • Operate heavy equipment, such as front-end loaders, skid steers, or forklifts, to safely and efficiently load raw logs onto the processor's deck and move processed firewood.
  • Monitor the quality of incoming logs, identifying and sorting out unsuitable wood (e.g., rotten, oversized, or containing foreign objects) to prevent equipment damage and ensure product quality.
  • Ensure the final firewood product meets strict company quality control standards for size, cleanliness, and moisture content before it is stacked, bundled, or stored.
  • Manage the flow of material through the entire processing system, from the log deck to the splitting wedge to the output conveyor, optimizing speed and efficiency without compromising safety.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work zone around the processing equipment, regularly clearing wood debris, sawdust, and other potential obstacles.
  • Stack, palletize, or bundle finished firewood according to specific order requirements, ensuring stacks are stable and secure for transport and storage.
  • Accurately track and record daily production volumes, including the number of cords processed, machine operating hours, and any periods of downtime.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements, and OSHA regulations at all times.
  • Skillfully maneuver and position large logs on the infeed deck to ensure straight, clean cuts and prevent jams or damage to the saw blade.
  • Adjust machine settings, such as cutting length and splitter wedge height, to accommodate different log diameters and customer specifications.
  • Collaborate with other yard personnel to ensure a smooth and continuous supply of raw materials to the processor and efficient removal of finished product.
  • Monitor all gauges, dials, and warning lights on the equipment's control panel to ensure the machine is operating within its normal parameters.
  • Handle the physical demands of the job, which includes standing for long periods, manual handling of wood, and working in various weather conditions, from heat and sun to cold and snow.
  • Manage the by-products of processing, such as sawdust and wood scraps, by directing them to designated collection areas for disposal or reuse.
  • Participate in the loading of delivery trucks with bulk or packaged firewood, ensuring loads are accurate and properly secured.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the processor's capabilities and limitations to maximize its output and operational lifespan.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding inventory levels, equipment status, and any production-related challenges.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in tracking production metrics, such as cords processed per hour, machine uptime, and waste percentages, to support operational analysis.
  • Provide feedback on operational workflows and equipment performance to contribute to continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate with yard staff and truck drivers to ensure seamless loading and unloading of raw logs and finished firewood.
  • Participate in daily team huddles and safety briefings to align on production goals and discuss potential hazards.
