🎯 Role Definition

A Fish Guide (Fishing Guide / Charter Guide) leads recreational fishing trips on freshwater or saltwater for individual anglers, groups, or clients booked through lodges and charter companies. The Fish Guide is responsible for trip planning, safe boat operation, locating fish with sonar/GPS, teaching casting and fishing techniques, handling and cleaning fish, maintaining tackle and vessels, and delivering exceptional customer service. This role requires a mixture of maritime skills, fisheries knowledge, hands-on angling experience, and strong guest-focused communication.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, coordinate and lead full-day and half-day guided fishing trips on freshwater or saltwater, including route planning, weather assessment, and contingency plans to ensure a safe and productive angling experience.
  • Operate and navigate a variety of vessels (center console, flats skiff, jon boat, bass boat, drift boat, or guide-specific rigs) safely in coastal, estuarine, or inland waters while complying with local maritime and boating regulations.
  • Use electronics and navigation tools such as GPS, chartplotters, sonar/fishfinder (e.g., Lowrance, Garmin), and mapping software to locate fish, structure, drop-offs, and productive fishing areas.
  • Instruct clients in casting, trolling, jigging, fly-casting, bait presentation, and hook-setting techniques tailored to target species like bass, trout, salmon, walleye, redfish, snook, tarpon, tuna, halibut, or other regional species.
  • Select and rig appropriate tackle, rods, reels, lines, leaders, rigs, bait, artificial lures and flies based on species, conditions, and client skill levels; demonstrate proper baiting and rigging techniques.
  • Implement and model proper fish handling, humane dispatch, and catch-and-release practices to maximize survival and comply with conservation best practices and local regulations.
  • Maintain vessel readiness and tackle organization: perform pre-trip checks, replenish consumables, repair or replace terminal tackle, restock first aid kits, and ensure lifejackets and safety gear are maintained and accessible.
  • Provide high-quality customer service: welcome guests, assess client experience levels, set realistic trip expectations, deliver hands-on instruction, and create memorable angling experiences with professional hospitality.
  • Manage client bookings, manifest, waivers, license checks, and ensure all guests have the appropriate fishing licenses; collect fees, process payments, and issue receipts or invoices as required by the operator.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local fishing and boating regulations, protected species rules, bag and size limits, and commercial charter permit requirements; report violations and maintain documentation.
  • Monitor weather, tide, current and water conditions continuously before and during trips and make prudent decisions to modify or cancel trips when safety is at risk.
  • Lead emergency response and first aid efforts on board, including CPR, bleeding control, hypothermia prevention, and coordinating with emergency services when necessary.
  • Provide on-board interpretation and education about local aquatic ecosystems, fish behavior, seasonal patterns, habitat conservation, and sustainable harvest practices to promote stewardship.
  • Supervise and train assistant guides, mates, or new employees in safe boat handling, angling techniques, client interaction, and company policies; conduct on-the-water training sessions.
  • Photograph and document notable catches for marketing and client follow-up while respecting client privacy and any regulatory requirements for catch reporting.
  • Clean, fillet, and package fish for clients when requested, ensuring sanitary practices and compliance with health and transportation regulations.
  • Maintain maintenance logs, record trip summaries, catch data, and client feedback for operational improvement and regulatory reporting; contribute catch data for research or lodge records when required.
  • Perform routine engine checks, basic mechanical troubleshooting, and coordinate scheduled maintenance with qualified marine mechanics to minimize downtime.
  • Stock, organize and maintain on-board inventory including bait, ice, rods, safety gear, cleaning supplies, and refreshments; manage supplier relationships for tackle and consumables.
  • Design and promote specialty trips (e.g., tournament prep, youth clinics, fly-fishing schools, photography trips, trophy hunts) to expand revenue streams and tailor services to niche markets.
  • Uphold professional appearance, brand standards and company customer service protocols; handle guest complaints diplomatically and escalate issues to management when necessary.
  • Manage time effectively to maximize fishing opportunities while ensuring timely launch and return; coordinate logistics with lodges, marinas, and dockmasters.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist marketing and sales efforts by providing trip reports, client testimonials, and content (photos/videos) for social media, website, and email newsletters to drive bookings and SEO.
  • Participate in scheduling, client communications (pre-trip instructions, weather updates), and calendar management with reservation teams and lodge front desks.
  • Support conservation and community outreach events such as youth fishing clinics, habitat restoration days, and school presentations to build local relationships and brand goodwill.
  • Help maintain operational documentation including safety checklists, equipment inventories, maintenance schedules, and permit records.
  • Provide feedback to management on route optimization, gear investments, and guest preferences to improve service offerings and profitability.
  • Assist with off-season tasks such as tackle inventory audits, boat winterization/waterproofing, and facility maintenance projects.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven boat handling and navigation skills across shallow flats, inshore, nearshore, and inland waterways; able to safely launch, recover and dock vessels.
  • Proficiency with marine electronics: GPS/chartplotter navigation, sonar/fishfinder operation and interpretation, VHF radio communication, and digital mapping tools.

Educational Background
