Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist senior fitters with the assembly, installation, and dismantling of industrial machinery, equipment, and complex pipework systems.
- Perform precise measurements, cutting, grinding, and bevelling of pipes, steel plates, and other materials using power tools and hand tools.
- Transport materials, tools, and heavy components to and from the worksite, utilizing manual handling techniques, dollies, and pallet jacks.
- Prepare work areas by setting up equipment, laying out components according to blueprints, and ensuring a clean and safe environment.
- Read and interpret basic engineering drawings, blueprints, and schematics to assist in the layout and fabrication of parts.
- Operate hand and power tools such as angle grinders, drills, impact wrenches, and hydraulic torque equipment safely and effectively.
- Support welding operations by preparing surfaces, tack welding components into place, and performing fire watch duties as required.
- Assist with the alignment, bolting, and securing of flanges, valves, pumps, and structural supports.
- Aid in conducting hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure tests on newly installed or repaired piping systems.
- Perform basic rigging and slinging tasks to safely lift and position heavy equipment under the supervision of a certified rigger.
- Maintain a clean and organized worksite, including sweeping, removing debris, and properly storing tools and materials post-shift.
- Help with preventative maintenance tasks, such as lubricating machinery, tightening fittings, and replacing worn components.
- Monitor the condition of tools and equipment, reporting any malfunctions, damage, or need for repair to the supervisor.
- Follow all company and site-specific Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Assist in the fabrication of brackets, supports, and structural steel elements in the workshop or on-site.
- Ensure all necessary permits, such as hot work or confined space entry permits, are in place before work commences.
- Keep an accurate inventory of parts, fittings, and consumables used for each job, reporting shortages as needed.
- Drive company vehicles to transport materials and personnel between different worksites or supplier locations.
- Support senior tradespeople during critical shutdown, turnaround, and commissioning projects, often requiring flexible hours.
- Complete daily logs, job safety analysis (JSA) forms, and other required project documentation accurately.
Secondary Functions
- Participate actively in daily toolbox talks, safety meetings, and training sessions to stay current on safety procedures and job requirements.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by suggesting more efficient or safer ways of completing tasks.
- Assist with the inspection and tagging of lifting gear, harnesses, and other safety-critical equipment.
- Maintain and organize the tool crib or workshop, ensuring equipment is clean, functional, and stored correctly.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Tool Proficiency: Confident and safe operation of common hand tools (wrenches, spanners) and power tools (grinders, drills, saws).
- Basic Measurement: Ability to accurately read a tape measure, ruler, and level. Familiarity with calipers is a plus.
- Blueprint Reading: Basic understanding of mechanical drawings, isometric drawings, and P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams).
- Material Handling: Experience in safely moving heavy or awkward materials, both manually and with assistance.
- Rigging & Slinging: Foundational knowledge of rigging principles and signals. A basic rigging ticket is highly desirable.
- Equipment Operation: A valid forklift license (LF) and/or EWP (Elevating Work Platform) ticket is highly advantageous.
- Mechanical Aptitude: A natural understanding of how mechanical systems work and the ability to troubleshoot simple issues.
- Welding Preparation: Knowledge of how to clean and prepare metal surfaces for welding (grinding, brushing).

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
