Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive preventative maintenance (PM) services on a diverse fleet of commercial vehicles, including light-duty trucks, heavy-duty tractors, trailers, and forklifts, following DOT regulations and company-defined schedules.
- Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic system failures using advanced diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins Insite, PACCAR Davie4, Bendix ACom), multimeters, and specialized testing equipment.
- Execute major and minor repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions (both manual and automated), drivetrains, and differentials.
- Conduct thorough troubleshooting and repair of vehicle braking systems, including air brakes, hydraulic brakes, and ABS systems, ensuring maximum stopping power and safety.
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair steering and suspension components, including performing wheel alignments to ensure vehicle stability and reduce tire wear.
- Maintain and repair vehicle HVAC systems, including diagnosing leaks, recharging refrigerant in compliance with Section 609 regulations, and replacing compressors, condensers, and other components.
- Conduct Federal and State-mandated vehicle inspections, such as DOT annual inspections, to ensure full compliance with all safety and regulatory standards.
- Utilize a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to accurately document all work performed, track labor hours, and record parts used for every repair order.
- Perform tire maintenance, including inspections, mounting, dismounting, balancing, and repairs, to ensure safety and maximize tire life.
- Diagnose and repair complex after-treatment system issues (DPF, DEF, SCR) to ensure emissions compliance and prevent costly component failures.
- Address and repair issues within the vehicle chassis, frame, and body, ensuring structural integrity and operational readiness.
- Troubleshoot and repair liftgates, hydraulic systems, and other auxiliary equipment attached to fleet vehicles.
- Respond to and perform emergency roadside assistance and field repairs for broken-down fleet vehicles to minimize service disruptions.
- Review and interpret driver-reported issues (DVIRs) to accurately identify and prioritize necessary repairs.
- Perform welding and fabrication (MIG, Stick) as necessary to repair or modify vehicle components and brackets.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in managing the parts inventory, including sourcing, ordering, and tracking components to ensure parts availability and minimize vehicle downtime.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in the maintenance shop, adhering to all company and OSHA safety protocols.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to junior mechanics and apprentices to foster team skill development.
- Participate in ongoing technical training and certification programs to stay current with emerging vehicle technologies and repair techniques.
- Communicate effectively with drivers and operations management regarding vehicle status, repair timelines, and potential issues.
- Recommend improvements to the preventative maintenance program to enhance vehicle reliability and reduce long-term repair costs.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Advanced Diagnostics: Proficiency with OEM and aftermarket diagnostic software for engines, transmissions, and brake systems (e.g., Insite, Allison DOC, Bendix).
- Diesel & Gas Engine Expertise: In-depth knowledge of engine theory, failure analysis, and repair procedures for major manufacturers.
- Electrical System Troubleshooting: Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics to diagnose and repair complex wiring, lighting, and electronic control module (ECM) issues.
- Brake System Certification: Strong understanding and experience with air and hydraulic brake systems; DOT brake certification is highly desirable.
- Drivetrain & Suspension: Proven ability to diagnose and repair transmissions, differentials, drive shafts, and all suspension components.
- Welding and Fabrication: Competency in MIG and/or stick welding for component repair and fabrication.
- HVAC Repair: Experience and preferably Section 609 certification for diagnosing and servicing vehicle air conditioning systems.
- CMMS Proficiency: Experience using computer systems to log repairs, manage work orders, and track parts.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred Education:
- Associate's Degree or Technical Certificate from a vocational school in Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, or a related field.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
- 3-5+ years of hands-on experience as a Diesel Mechanic, Truck Technician, or Fleet Mechanic working on commercial vehicles.
Preferred:
- 5+ years of experience in a fleet maintenance environment with a mixed fleet (Class 7-8 tractors, trailers, light-duty trucks, etc.).
- ASE Master Truck Technician certifications are highly preferred.
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B.
- A personal set of professional-grade tools is typically required.
