Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist senior mechanics in performing comprehensive preventive maintenance (PM) inspections and services on a diverse fleet, including commercial trucks, vans, and specialized equipment.
- Execute fundamental maintenance tasks such as oil and filter changes, chassis lubrication, coolant system flushes, and transmission fluid services.
- Perform tire maintenance, including inspections for wear and damage, rotations, mounting, dismounting, and balancing of commercial vehicle tires.
- Support mechanics during complex repair jobs by retrieving tools, sourcing parts, and providing hands-on assistance with component removal and installation.
- Conduct thorough multi-point vehicle inspections of key systems, including brakes, suspension, steering, exhaust, and lighting, to identify and report potential safety issues or upcoming repair needs.
- Help diagnose basic vehicle issues by reading and interpreting fault codes from diagnostic scanners under the guidance of a senior technician.
- Perform minor repairs and adjustments, such as replacing light bulbs, wiper blades, belts, and hoses, to ensure vehicles meet safety and operational standards.
- Operate and maintain shop equipment, including vehicle lifts, tire machines, jacks, and diagnostic tools, in a safe and responsible manner.
- Accurately document all work performed, parts used, and time allocated on digital or paper work orders for proper record-keeping and billing.
- Conduct pre- and post-repair road tests (under supervision) to verify vehicle performance and confirm the successful completion of maintenance tasks.
- Assist in maintaining the shop's parts inventory by receiving, stocking, and organizing components, and notifying supervisors of low stock levels.
- Prepare vehicles for service by positioning them in the service bay, and ensure they are clean and ready for operation upon completion of work.
- Respond to and assist with minor on-road vehicle breakdowns or service calls as needed, learning field repair techniques.
- Participate actively in all safety training sessions and consistently apply learned principles to maintain a hazard-free work environment.
- Learn and apply knowledge of DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations related to vehicle maintenance and roadworthiness.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the maintenance shop, including sweeping floors, disposing of waste fluids and materials properly, and organizing tool chests.
- Assist with shuttling vehicles between company locations, repair shops, and inspection stations as required.
- Support the upkeep of the maintenance facility and grounds, contributing to a professional and efficient workspace.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss workflow, challenges, and opportunities for process improvement within the maintenance department.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Foundational knowledge of automotive and/or diesel engine systems, including electrical, braking, and powertrain components.
- Proficiency in the safe and effective use of basic automotive hand tools, power tools (e.g., impact wrenches), and shop equipment.
- Experience performing basic vehicle maintenance, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks.
- Ability to read and comprehend technical service manuals and follow step-by-step repair instructions.
- Basic computer literacy for entering data into maintenance software and looking up repair information.
- A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are mandatory; ability or willingness to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a significant plus.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years of relevant experience in a mechanical or repair setting.
