Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive preventative maintenance services, including oil changes, lubrication, fluid level checks, and multipoint inspections on a diverse fleet of diesel and gasoline vehicles.
- Diagnose complex performance issues using advanced computer-based diagnostic tools, scan tools, and multimeters to pinpoint faults in engines, transmissions, and electrical systems.
- Conduct thorough U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and other state-mandated annual vehicle inspections, ensuring strict compliance with all safety and emissions regulations.
- Execute major and minor repairs on heavy-duty systems, including but not limited to diesel engines, hydraulic and air brake systems, suspensions, and drive-train components.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and service advanced vehicle systems such as HVAC, anti-lock braking systems (ABS), electronic stability control, and onboard telematics.
- Accurately document all maintenance activities, parts usage, and labor time in our Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to maintain precise service histories.
- Respond to and effectively manage road-call situations, performing on-site diagnostics and emergency repairs to minimize vehicle downtime and service disruptions.
- Repair and maintain trailer components, including landing gear, roll-up doors, suspension systems, and electrical lighting systems.
- Perform comprehensive tire maintenance, including inspection, rotation, mounting, balancing, and flat repairs to ensure safety and maximize tire life.
- Utilize welding and light fabrication skills (MIG, Stick) to repair vehicle frames, bodies, and associated equipment as needed.
- Test drive vehicles before and after repairs to verify that all work has been completed correctly and the vehicle operates safely and to specification.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams to perform accurate and efficient repairs on complex systems.
- Manage and resolve all defects reported on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) in a timely and compliant manner.
- Install, diagnose, and repair specialized vehicle equipment such as liftgates, refrigeration units, and auxiliary power units (APUs).
- Perform complex repairs and rebuilds of major components such as engines, transmissions, and differentials to OEM specifications.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment, adhering to all company safety policies and OSHA standards.
- Assist in managing the parts inventory by identifying needed parts, sourcing from vendors, and tracking stock levels to ensure availability for future repairs.
- Provide mentorship and on-the-job training to junior technicians and apprentices to foster skill development within the team.
- Communicate effectively with drivers and the operations team regarding vehicle status, repair timelines, and potential delays.
- Assist the Fleet Manager in evaluating new vehicle specifications and upfitting requirements for fleet additions.
- Keep abreast of the latest industry trends, technologies, and repair techniques through ongoing training and professional development.
- Manage warranty-related repairs by correctly documenting failures, processing claims, and coordinating with manufacturers or vendors.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Advanced Diagnostics: Proficiency with OEM and aftermarket diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins INSITE, PACCAR Davie, Bendix ACom) and hardware for troubleshooting electronic control systems.
- Diesel Engine Systems: In-depth knowledge of diesel engine theory, repair, and maintenance, including fuel, exhaust (after-treatment systems like DPF/SCR), and cooling systems.
- Air Brake Systems: Expertise in diagnosing, repairing, and certifying vehicle air brake systems in compliance with DOT regulations.
- Electrical Troubleshooting: Strong ability to read wiring diagrams and troubleshoot complex electrical and electronic system failures.
- Hydraulic Systems: Experience with the diagnosis and repair of hydraulic systems, including pumps, cylinders, and control valves on equipment like liftgates and cranes.
- Welding & Fabrication: Competency in MIG and/or Stick welding for structural and non-structural repairs.
- ASE Certifications: Possession of or ability to obtain ASE certifications in Medium-Heavy Truck series (T1-T8) is highly desirable.
- CDL License: A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is often preferred or required to test drive certain vehicles.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic or fleet technician working on commercial trucks and trailers.
Preferred:
- Experience working with a specific fleet type (e.g., Class 8 tractors, delivery vans, refrigerated units, construction equipment).
- A proven track record of successfully performing preventative maintenance and complex repairs.
- Verifiable experience with electronic diagnostics and working within a formal fleet maintenance program.
