Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete setup and changeover of multi-color flexographic printing presses (e.g., Mark Andy, Nilpeter, Comco) according to detailed job order specifications.
  • Accurately mount photopolymer printing plates onto cylinders, ensuring precise registration and alignment to prevent printing defects.
  • Skillfully mix and manage solvent-based and water-based inks to achieve exact color matches against PMS color books and customer-provided standards.
  • Continuously monitor and adjust ink viscosity, pH levels, and drying temperatures throughout the press run to maintain consistent print quality.
  • Operate the press at optimal speeds while constantly monitoring for print defects such as halos, dot gain, smudging, and registration shifts.
  • Conduct rigorous in-process quality control checks, utilizing tools like spectrophotometers, densitometers, and loop magnifiers to verify color accuracy and print clarity.
  • Perform meticulous adjustments to press tension, die-cutting units, and impression settings to ensure conformity with product specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve a wide range of mechanical and print-related issues in real-time to minimize downtime and material waste.
  • Read and interpret complex job tickets, production schedules, and technical specifications to ensure all production requirements are met accurately.
  • Manage the entire lifecycle of a job on the press, from loading raw material substrates to unloading finished, printed rolls.
  • Ensure all safety protocols, including machine guarding, lockout/tagout procedures, and proper handling of chemicals, are strictly followed.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on the press, including cleaning ink pans, lubricating moving parts, and inspecting anilox rollers.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate production logs, quality control records, and material usage documentation for traceability and inventory purposes.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance department to perform first article inspections and obtain approvals before commencing full production runs.
  • Strive to meet and exceed established production targets for efficiency, speed, and scrap reduction without compromising on quality.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the maintenance team in diagnosing and resolving more complex mechanical or electrical press malfunctions.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by providing feedback and suggestions for process optimization and waste reduction.
  • Support inventory management by accurately tracking the consumption of inks, substrates, solvents, and other press-room consumables.
  • Provide guidance and on-the-job training to new Press Helpers or Trainee Operators to foster team skill development.
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness and organization in the press area, adhering to 5S principles and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Flexographic Press Operation: Proven experience operating narrow or wide-web flexo presses.
  • Ink & Color Management: Strong ability to perform custom color matching by eye and with spectrophotometers; proficiency in managing ink viscosity.
  • Plate Mounting: Expertise in mounting and registering printing plates with precision.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong ability to troubleshoot and perform minor maintenance and adjustments on printing equipment.
  • Quality Control Tools: Familiarity with using measurement tools such as rulers, micrometers, and magnification loops for quality inspection.
  • Substrate Handling: Knowledge of different printing substrates (paper, film, foil) and how they interact with inks and the press.
  • Die Cutting: Experience with setting up and adjusting rotary die-cutting stations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical certificate or associate degree in Printing Technology, Graphic Arts, or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5+ years of direct experience as a Flexo Press Operator in a manufacturing or packaging environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience operating modern servo-driven presses (e.g., Mark Andy P-Series, Nilpeter FA-Line) is highly desirable.
  • Background in a GMP or food-grade packaging facility.
