Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Expertly operate heavy-duty floor sanding equipment, including drum sanders, edgers, and buffers, to prepare and level wood floors for finishing.
- Meticulously prepare diverse subfloors and surfaces by scraping, cleaning, grinding, or filling cracks and holes to ensure a flawless base for installation.
- Apply multiple coats of stain, sealer, polyurethane, varnish, and other finishes with precision using brushes, rollers, pads, or professional-grade spray equipment.
- Perform intricate floor repairs, including board replacement, patching, and blending new materials with existing flooring to create a seamless appearance.
- Grind, hone, and polish concrete surfaces using planetary grinders and diamond tooling to achieve specified levels of sheen and aggregate exposure.
- Mix and apply specialized flooring systems, such as epoxy, urethane, and other resinous coatings, according to strict manufacturer specifications and project requirements.
- Measure job site areas accurately and cut flooring materials (hardwood, vinyl, laminate) to fit perfectly around fixtures, walls, and other obstacles.
- Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and finishing schedules to understand project scope, material requirements, and client expectations.
- Conduct thorough moisture and pH testing on subfloors to prevent installation failures and ensure long-term durability of the finished floor.
- Install transition strips, moldings, and cove base to provide a clean, professional finish between different flooring types and along wall perimeters.
- Perform detailed quality control inspections throughout and upon completion of projects to guarantee work meets or exceeds company and industry standards.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of various wood species, concrete properties, and chemical finishes to select the appropriate materials and methods for each unique project.
- Execute decorative flooring techniques, including applying custom stains, dyes, metallic pigments, or creating patterns to meet specific design goals.
- Ensure all adjacent surfaces, such as walls, cabinetry, and fixtures, are properly protected using tape, plastic sheeting, and other masking materials before work begins.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain, clean, and perform minor repairs on all company-provided tools and equipment to ensure operational readiness and extend service life.
- Uphold and enforce strict job site safety protocols, including the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and proper ventilation.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with project managers, clients, and other trade professionals to provide progress updates and address any on-site challenges.
- Manage on-site inventory of materials and supplies, anticipating needs and reporting shortages to prevent project delays.
- Assist in training and mentoring apprentices, sharing knowledge of best practices, finishing techniques, and safety standards.
- Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of hazards throughout the duration of the project, including end-of-day cleanup.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Hardwood Floor Sanding & Refinishing: Proficiency with drum sanders, edgers, buffers, and Trio/multi-disc sanders.
- Epoxy & Resinous Coatings: Experience in mixing, troweling, and rolling multi-component flooring systems.
- Concrete Grinding & Polishing: Skilled in operating planetary grinders and using diamond tooling sequences.
- Finish Application: Expertise in applying stains, sealers, and topcoats (oil-based, water-based, conversion varnish) to achieve a uniform, blemish-free surface.
- Floor Installation: Knowledge of installing VCT, LVT, sheet vinyl, and hardwood flooring.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

- Manufacturer-specific certifications (e.g., NWFA, Ardex, Sika, Laticrete).
Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
- A minimum of 3-5 years of dedicated, hands-on experience as a professional Floor Finisher or a similar role in the flooring industry.
Preferred:
- 5+ years of experience, including lead or supervisory roles, with a proven portfolio of completed residential and commercial projects. Experience with a wide range of materials and complex, decorative applications is highly desirable.
