Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Accurately measure, mark, and meticulously cut various flooring materials, including hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), sheet vinyl, and carpet, according to detailed blueprints and layout plans.
Perform comprehensive subfloor preparation, including removing old flooring, sweeping, scraping, sanding, and filling cracks to create a clean, smooth, and level surface essential for a quality installation.
Expertly install a wide range of flooring products using appropriate industry-standard techniques such as gluing, nailing, stapling, or floating/interlocking systems to ensure a durable and flawless finish.
Conduct thorough inspections of the subfloor for any moisture issues, performing moisture tests and applying moisture barriers or sealants as needed to prevent future damage.
Read and precisely interpret work orders, blueprints, and floor plans to understand the project scope, material requirements, and specific layout designs.
Operate a full range of hand and power tools safely and effectively, including table saws, miter saws, nail guns, floor sanders, and carpet stretchers.
Install baseboards, quarter-round, molding, and other trim to provide a clean, finished look and seamless transition between the flooring and walls.
Communicate professionally and proactively with clients, project managers, and team members, providing clear project updates, addressing questions, and ensuring a positive customer experience.
Troubleshoot and skillfully resolve on-site installation challenges as they arise, applying critical thinking to overcome issues related to uneven subfloors, complex room layouts, or material defects.
Maintain a strict adherence to all job site safety protocols and OSHA standards, including the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), to ensure a safe working environment.
Manage on-site material inventory, ensuring all necessary flooring, underlayment, adhesives, and tools are accounted for and handled with care to prevent waste or damage.
Provide post-installation cleanup of the entire work area, removing all debris, tools, and materials to leave the client's space neat, tidy, and ready for immediate use.
Educate clients on the proper care and maintenance procedures for their newly installed floors to ensure long-term beauty and durability.
Perform precise repairs on existing floors when required, which may include replacing damaged planks or tiles, refinishing surfaces, or re-stretching carpets.
Coordinate workflow and timing with other trade professionals on-site, such as painters, plumbers, and electricians, to maintain project schedules and efficiency.
Apply stains, sealants, and custom finishes to hardwood floors, demonstrating artistry and precision to achieve the client’s desired color and protective coating.
Stretch and secure carpeting using power stretchers and knee kickers to ensure a tight, wrinkle-free fit across the entire room and at all seams.
Complete and submit all required project documentation, such as work orders, material usage sheets, and daily progress reports, in a timely and accurate manner.
Load and unload materials and equipment, carefully transporting them to and from the job site to prevent damage and ensure project readiness.
Maintain all company-issued tools and equipment in excellent working condition through regular cleaning, inspection, and preventative maintenance.

Secondary Functions

Assist in the training and mentoring of apprentice installers or new team members, sharing knowledge of best practices and safety procedures.
Participate in team meetings to discuss upcoming projects, review new flooring products, and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
Provide constructive feedback to management on new tools, materials, and installation techniques that could improve quality and efficiency.
Help maintain the organization and cleanliness of the company warehouse, workshop, or vehicles.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Flooring Material Expertise: Deep knowledge of various flooring types, including solid hardwood, engineered wood, LVP/LVT, laminate, carpet, and sheet vinyl.
Subfloor Preparation: Mastery of subfloor assessment and preparation techniques, including leveling, grinding, and moisture mitigation.
Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the safe and efficient operation of professional flooring tools, such as miter saws, undercut saws, power stretchers, and nailers.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Typical Experience Range:

2-5 years of demonstrated, hands-on experience in professional flooring installation.

Preferred:

5+ years of experience with a diverse portfolio of completed residential and/or commercial projects. Experience leading a small crew is highly desirable.
