Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct all daily operations of the floral department, including product ordering, receiving, processing, and inventory management, to ensure optimal freshness and product availability.
  • Develop and execute strategic merchandising plans, creating visually stunning displays that align with seasonal trends, holidays, and store-wide promotional calendars to drive sales and customer interest.
  • Manage the department's financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting sales, monitoring profit and loss (P&L) statements, and implementing strategies to achieve revenue targets and control expenses.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of floral clerks and designers, overseeing scheduling, training, performance evaluations, and fostering a collaborative and customer-focused work environment.
  • Ensure the highest standards of customer service are met by training the team to proactively engage with customers, provide expert advice on plant care, and fulfill special orders and custom arrangement requests.
  • Oversee the creation of high-quality floral arrangements, corsages, bouquets, and other custom designs, ensuring they meet company quality standards and customer specifications.
  • Implement and monitor inventory control procedures to manage stock levels, minimize waste and shrink, and conduct regular inventory counts and audits.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with vendors and suppliers to negotiate favorable pricing, ensure timely delivery of high-quality products, and stay informed about new floral varieties and trends.
  • Guarantee department compliance with all company policies, food safety regulations, and health and safety standards to maintain a safe and clean working environment for both team members and customers.
  • Analyze sales data, customer feedback, and market trends to identify opportunities for growth, product assortment adjustments, and service improvements.
  • Plan and manage the department's labor schedule to ensure adequate coverage for peak business hours and special events while adhering to labor budget constraints.
  • Handle customer inquiries, special requests, and escalated issues with professionalism and efficiency, turning potential challenges into opportunities for customer loyalty.
  • Price all floral products and arrangements competitively and accurately, ensuring proper signage and adherence to pricing guidelines to maintain margin integrity.
  • Oversee the care and maintenance of all fresh flowers, potted plants, and foliage to maximize their lifespan and visual appeal.
  • Coordinate with store management and other department heads on cross-merchandising initiatives and store-wide events to enhance the overall customer shopping experience.
  • Manage the department's supply inventory, including vases, ribbons, foam, and other design tools, ensuring all necessary materials are on hand.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to communicate sales goals, share product knowledge, and provide updates on company policies and procedures.
  • Actively recruit, interview, and onboard new team members to ensure the department is staffed with skilled and motivated individuals.
  • Develop specialized offerings for holidays, weddings, and special events, including managing consultations and order fulfillment for large-scale floral needs.
  • Stay current with floral design techniques, industry trends, and new product innovations through continuous learning and industry networking.
  • Implement effective product rotation (FIFO - First-In, First-Out) for all perishable floral products to reduce spoilage and ensure customers receive the freshest items.
  • Operate and train team members on all relevant equipment, including POS systems, wrapping machines, and floral coolers, ensuring proper usage and maintenance.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Merchandising teams to develop and execute local and regional promotional campaigns.
  • Participate in store-wide manager-on-duty rotations, providing leadership and operational support to the entire store as needed.
  • Represent the floral department in weekly store leadership meetings, reporting on performance and contributing to overall store strategy.
  • Support community outreach and local events by coordinating donations or participating in floral-related workshops.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Floral Design & Arrangement: Expertise in creating a wide range of floral arrangements, from simple bouquets to complex event pieces.
  • P&L and Budget Management: Ability to read financial reports, manage a budget, and control costs to ensure profitability.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5 years of experience in a floral or retail environment, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

  • Direct experience with P&L responsibility, budget creation, and inventory management.
  • A portfolio of floral design work is a strong asset.
