Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive, unpack, and meticulously process bulk flower shipments, including properly cutting stems, hydrating flowers, and organizing them in coolers to maximize freshness and vase life.
  • Design and create a diverse portfolio of floral arrangements, including hand-tied bouquets, vase designs, corsages, boutonnieres, and sympathy tributes, following shop recipes or custom client requests.
  • Provide an exceptional and welcoming front-line customer service experience by greeting clients, actively listening to their needs, and offering expert advice on flower selection, arrangement styles, and floral care.
  • Consult with customers in-person, over the phone, and via email to capture their vision and requirements for special occasions, including birthdays, anniversaries, funerals, and corporate events.
  • Operate the Point-of-Sale (POS) system with accuracy to process all types of customer transactions, manage orders, and handle opening/closing cash register procedures.
  • Manage the complete order lifecycle from intake (walk-in, phone, online portals) to fulfillment, ensuring all details, including special instructions and card messages, are correctly recorded and executed.
  • Carefully prepare and package arrangements for delivery, ensuring they are structurally secure, properly hydrated, and presented beautifully to the recipient.
  • Maintain the overall cleanliness, organization, and visual appeal of the entire shop, including the retail sales floor, design workstations, and walk-in coolers.
  • Monitor and manage inventory levels of fresh flowers, foliage, potted plants, and essential hard goods like vases, ribbons, and floral foam, communicating reorder needs to management.
  • Perform daily conditioning of all floral products, which involves checking water levels, re-cutting stems, and removing any expired or damaged flowers and foliage to maintain premium quality.
  • Assist lead designers with the preparation, logistics, and on-site setup for large-scale weddings and events, ensuring flawless execution of the floral decor.
  • Create and maintain attractive in-store displays of pre-made arrangements, plants, and seasonal gift items to inspire customers and drive impulse sales.
  • Professionally answer phones, screen calls, and provide accurate information to callers or route inquiries to the appropriate team member.
  • Water, prune, and provide general care for all indoor plants and orchids, ensuring they remain healthy and presentable for sale.
  • Accurately write or print personalized messages for enclosure cards, ensuring correct spelling and sentiment as requested by the customer.
  • Uphold and execute all shop policies and procedures, including performing daily opening and closing duties to ensure a smooth and efficient operation.
  • Proactively learn new floral design techniques, stay current with industry trends, and expand knowledge of flower and plant varieties to contribute fresh ideas and enhance personal skills.
  • Build and nurture positive, long-term client relationships through friendly, knowledgeable, and reliable service, thereby encouraging repeat business and referrals.
  • Handle customer issues or complaints with professionalism and empathy, actively working to find a satisfactory resolution that maintains the shop's reputation.
  • Assist in planning and executing seasonal shop transformations, including decorating the retail space for major holidays like Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and the Christmas season.
  • Coordinate with delivery drivers to plan efficient routes, ensuring all arrangements reach their destination on time and in perfect condition.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Floral Design Principles: Strong understanding of color theory, balance, scale, and texture in creating aesthetically pleasing arrangements.
  • Flower Processing & Conditioning: Knowledge of proper techniques for cutting, hydrating, and storing a wide variety of flowers and foliage to ensure maximum longevity.
  • Plant & Flower Identification: Ability to identify common flower and plant species, and advise on their care and characteristics.
  • Point-of-Sale (POS) Operation: Proficiency in using retail POS systems for ringing up sales, processing payments, and managing orders.
  • Inventory Management: Basic understanding of tracking stock levels for perishable goods (flowers) and non-perishable supplies (vases, ribbon).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Certificate or diploma in Floral Design from a recognized vocational school or program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years of experience in a customer-facing role.

Preferred: Previous experience working in a flower shop, event company, garden center, or the floral department of a grocery store is highly desirable. A portfolio of personal or professional design work is a strong asset.
