Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Design and deliver engaging, high-quality private and group flute lessons to students of varying ages, backgrounds, and skill levels, from beginner to advanced.
- Develop individualized curriculum and long-term learning plans for each student, focusing on their unique goals, strengths, and areas for improvement.
- Instruct students in all fundamental aspects of flute playing, including proper posture, breath control, embouchure, tone production, articulation, and finger technique.
- Teach comprehensive music theory, sight-reading, ear training, and music history as it pertains to the flute repertoire and general musicianship.
- Guide students through a diverse range of repertoire, from classical and baroque to contemporary and jazz, appropriate for their developmental level.
- Systematically prepare students for performances, recitals, and external examinations (such as ABRSM, RCM, or state/regional solo and ensemble festivals).
- Cultivate a positive, encouraging, and disciplined learning atmosphere that motivates students and fosters a genuine passion for music.
- Provide constructive, actionable feedback during and after lessons to facilitate student progress and build their confidence.
- Assess student progress through regular evaluations and performance opportunities, adjusting teaching strategies as needed to ensure continuous development.
- Maintain open and professional communication with students and parents regarding scheduling, progress, practice expectations, and performance opportunities.
- Utilize a variety of pedagogical methods and instructional materials to keep lessons fresh, interesting, and effective for different learning styles.
- Organize and lead studio classes, workshops, or masterclasses to provide students with collaborative and peer-learning experiences.
- Assist students in the selection, maintenance, and care of their instruments and related equipment.
- Prepare advanced students for college auditions, competitions, and youth orchestra placements by refining their technique and performance skills.
- Stay current with best practices in music education, flute pedagogy, and performance trends by engaging in professional development activities.
- Demonstrate advanced flute techniques and musical concepts through live performance within lessons to inspire and instruct students.
- Foster essential practice skills and habits, teaching students how to practice efficiently and effectively on their own.
- Manage lesson scheduling, billing, and record-keeping accurately and professionally using studio management software.
- Develop and maintain a professional teaching studio that is safe, clean, and conducive to learning.
- Collaborate with other faculty members to plan and execute student recitals, concerts, and other school-wide musical events.
