As a professional Flute Player, you will serve as a core member of our woodwind section, contributing to the overall artistic quality and integrity of the ensemble. Your primary role is to prepare for and perform in a full season of rehearsals, concerts, recordings, and tours. This position demands not only supreme technical proficiency on the flute and associated instruments (like the piccolo and alto flute) but also a keen sense of ensemble playing, stylistic interpretation, and professionalism. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prepare and perform a diverse and demanding repertoire for all scheduled symphonic, chamber, pops, educational, and special-event concerts to the highest professional standard.
  • Attend and actively participate in all required rehearsals, sectionals, and sound-checks, arriving fully prepared to contribute effectively.
  • Master and maintain performance-level proficiency on primary instrument (flute) as well as auxiliary instruments such as Piccolo and/or Alto Flute as required by the repertoire.
  • Interpret and execute musical direction from the Music Director and guest conductors with precision, flexibility, and artistic sensitivity.
  • Maintain your personal instruments in excellent, concert-ready condition, including handling necessary repairs and regular maintenance.
  • Develop and sustain a rigorous personal practice regimen to continuously enhance technical skills, tone quality, and musical interpretation.
  • Collaborate collegially with the Principal Flute, woodwind section colleagues, and all orchestra members to achieve a cohesive and blended ensemble sound.
  • Perform in smaller chamber music ensembles comprised of orchestra members for designated concert series and community engagement events.
  • Sight-read music of advanced difficulty accurately and musically during rehearsals and, when necessary, in performance.
  • Participate in all domestic and international tours, adhering to complex travel schedules and maintaining peak performance levels in various venues.
  • Engage in recording sessions for broadcasts, albums, and digital distribution, demonstrating stamina and focus under studio conditions.
  • Uphold the artistic standards and policies of the orchestra both on and off the stage, serving as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Continuously study and research scores to develop a deep understanding of historical context, style, and composer intent for all programmed works.
  • Successfully pass probationary periods and periodic performance reviews or re-auditions as stipulated by the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Demonstrate exceptional intonation, rhythm, and dynamic control, adjusting instantaneously to the conductor and the acoustics of the hall.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate actively in educational and community engagement programs, including school visits, masterclasses, and pre-concert lectures.
  • Serve on musician committees, such as artistic, audition, or outreach committees, to contribute to the orchestra's governance and strategic direction.
  • Engage with donors, patrons, and board members at special events to foster support and build community relationships for the organization.
  • Mentor students or younger musicians through orchestra-sponsored fellowship or mentorship programs.
  • Assist the orchestra's library staff in the marking of bowings and other performance-related notations in flute/piccolo parts.
  • Propose repertoire for chamber music concerts or other special projects that highlight the woodwind section.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Flute Performance or equivalent extensive professional experience demonstrating a comparable level of training.

Preferred Education:

  • Master of Music (M.M.) or Doctorate of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Flute Performance from a nationally or internationally recognized conservatory or university.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of professional performance experience with symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, or in a high-level freelance capacity.

  • Significant experience performing as Principal Flute, Second Flute, or Principal Piccolo.
