Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Expertly guide and instruct clients of all skill levels, from first-time novices to seasoned anglers, ensuring a positive, educational, and productive day on the water.
- Provide comprehensive, hands-on instruction on fly casting techniques, line management, knot tying, and proper fish-fighting methods.
- Safely and skillfully operate, navigate, and position a drift boat, raft, or other watercraft in variable river conditions, including Class I-III rapids.
- Utilize in-depth knowledge of local entomology, hydrology, and fish behavior to select the appropriate flies, rigs, and fishing locations throughout the day.
- Prioritize client and personal safety above all else by conducting pre-trip safety briefings, fitting PFDs, and proactively managing risks on and off the water.
- Deliver a premium, full-service experience, including rigging all equipment, managing tackle, and anticipating client needs before they arise.
- Demonstrate and enforce proper fish handling techniques for photography and a safe, healthy release, educating clients on catch-and-release ethics.
- Prepare and serve high-quality, shore-side lunches and refreshments, accommodating any client dietary restrictions or preferences.
- Act as a local ambassador and naturalist, sharing knowledge about the river's ecosystem, local history, geology, and wildlife to enrich the client experience.
- Maintain a consistently professional, patient, and engaging demeanor throughout long and often physically demanding days, regardless of weather or fishing success.
- Customize each trip itinerary and instructional approach based on client goals, physical abilities, and previous fishing experience.
- Effectively communicate trip logistics, expectations, and fishing reports with clients before, during, and after their guided day.
- Manage on-the-water logistics, including shuttling vehicles or coordinating with shuttle services to ensure seamless put-in and take-out transitions.
- Practice and actively promote Leave No Trace principles, leaving every fishing spot and lunch site cleaner than it was found.
- Net, handle, and unhook fish for clients efficiently and safely, maximizing the fish's chance of survival and the client's enjoyment.
- Assess and adapt to rapidly changing weather and water conditions to maintain safety and optimize the fishing strategy.
Secondary Functions
- Meticulously maintain, clean, and organize all company gear, including drift boats, rafts, trailers, rods, reels, lines, and terminal tackle to ensure safety and readiness.
- Assist in fly shop operations when not guiding, including providing expert retail advice, restocking inventory, and assisting with client bookings.
- Tie custom and standard fly patterns for guide boxes and potential retail sale, staying current on the most effective local patterns.
- Contribute to the outfitter's marketing efforts by capturing high-quality photos and videos of the client experience (with their permission) for social media and web use.
- Complete and submit detailed daily trip reports, logging river conditions, catch data, effective flies, and any notable client feedback or incidents.
- Participate actively in pre-season training, swiftwater rescue courses, advanced first aid drills, and ongoing professional development workshops.
- Collaborate with the guide team and lodge staff, sharing up-to-date river intelligence to ensure all clients benefit from collective knowledge.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Expert-level fly casting ability with both single-hand and, where applicable, Spey rods.
- Proficient and certified rowing skills, with demonstrable ability to safely maneuver a drift boat or raft in moving water and navigate technical rapids.
- Advanced knot-tying skills for a wide array of leader-to-tippet and fly-to-tippet connections.
- Comprehensive knowledge of regional aquatic entomology, fish species, and their seasonal behaviors.
- Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or higher (WFR/WEMT) and CPR/AED certifications.
- State-required Guide or Outfitter License and any necessary boater education cards.
- Ability to perform field-level maintenance and repairs on boats, trailers, and fishing equipment.

Experience Requirements
