Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and maintain a high-pressure spray foam rig, including proportioner, pumps, hoses, and spray guns, ensuring optimal performance and temperature settings.
  • Prepare and protect job sites by meticulously masking off windows, doors, flooring, and other surfaces to prevent overspray.
  • Set up proper ventilation systems at each job site to ensure a safe working environment for the crew and occupants.
  • Apply open-cell and closed-cell spray polyurethane foam (SPF) to various substrates, including walls, attics, crawl spaces, and roof decks, according to work orders.
  • Ensure consistent and correct thickness of foam application to meet specified R-values and building code requirements.
  • Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and diagrams to understand the scope of work and specific project requirements.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance and cleaning of all spray foam equipment to prevent clogs and ensure longevity.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions in the field, making necessary adjustments or minor repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Monitor environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, and adjust application techniques accordingly to ensure proper foam curing and adhesion.
  • Execute the trimming, cutting, and removal of excess cured foam to create a smooth, finished surface ready for drywall or other finishes.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and OSHA safety protocols, including the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like full-face respirators, coveralls, and gloves.
  • Handle and mix chemical components (A-side and B-side) safely and according to manufacturer specifications and safety data sheets (SDS).
  • Load and unload heavy materials, tools, and equipment from the work vehicle at the beginning and end of each workday.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional appearance of the work truck, trailer, and job site throughout the project.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, site supervisors, and builders, providing updates on project progress and addressing any questions.
  • Complete daily project paperwork, including material usage logs, time sheets, and job completion forms, with accuracy and detail.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new helpers or apprentice sprayers on proper techniques, safety, and equipment operation.
  • Conduct final quality control inspections of the completed work to ensure it meets company standards and client satisfaction.
  • Perform basic carpentry or framing tasks as needed to prepare a site for insulation or to make minor repairs.
  • Participate in regular safety meetings and ongoing training sessions to stay current with industry best practices and new technologies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Spray Foam Equipment Operation: Proficient in operating and troubleshooting high-pressure proportioners (e.g., Graco, PMC) and spray guns.
  • SPF Application Techniques: Expertise in applying both open-cell and closed-cell foam with consistent thickness and texture.
  • Building Science Knowledge: Understanding of thermal and moisture control, air barriers, and how insulation systems function within a building envelope.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ability to perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and field repairs on spray foam rigs and tools.
  • Trimming and Finishing: Skill in using scarifying tools and saws to trim cured foam for a clean, flat finish.
  • Safety Protocol Adherence: In-depth knowledge of chemical handling safety, SDS, and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), especially respiratory protection.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications to determine insulation requirements.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certification from the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) or a similar trade school program.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of direct experience as a Foam Sprayer.

Preferred:

  • 3+ years of dedicated experience as a primary sprayer on a rig.
  • Verifiable experience with both residential and commercial projects.
  • Documented experience with major equipment brands like Graco, PMC, or Gusmer.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is often required.
