Primary Functions

  • Operate and maintain a diverse range of atmospheric effects equipment, including various types of foggers, hazers, crackers, and low-lying fog machines (using dry ice or CO2).
  • Program, cue, and execute atmospheric effects with precision timing using DMX controllers, dedicated show control systems, or manual operation in sync with performance cues.
  • Conduct rigorous pre-show safety inspections, functional tests, and system checks on all special effects equipment to guarantee reliable and safe performance.
  • Collaborate directly with directors, lighting designers, and stage managers to interpret their creative vision and achieve the desired atmospheric aesthetic for each scene or event.
  • Diligently monitor fluid levels, gas pressures, temperature outputs, and overall performance of all atmospheric units throughout rehearsals and live shows.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance, cleaning, and minor on-site repairs of fog and haze machines to ensure equipment longevity and operational readiness.
  • Manage and maintain a detailed inventory of all special effects consumables, including various fog fluids, haze juices, CO2 canisters, and dry ice, and forecast future needs.
  • Ensure all atmospheric effects operations strictly adhere to venue policies, local fire codes, and industry health and safety standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, and Equity guidelines).
  • Accurately read and interpret technical documentation, including ground plans, lighting plots, cue sheets, and production schedules to execute effects flawlessly.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, control system errors, and other technical issues quickly and calmly under the pressure of a live show environment to minimize production disruptions.
  • Safely handle, transport, store, and dispose of specialized and potentially hazardous materials such as liquid CO2, solid CO2 (dry ice), and various chemical-based fluids.
  • Actively participate in the load-in, professional setup, positioning, and post-show strike (teardown and packing) of all special effects equipment.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation, including equipment usage logs, maintenance records, consumable consumption reports, and detailed show cue notes.
  • Calibrate atmospheric effects to ensure consistent and repeatable output, density, dispersal patterns, and dissipation rates as dictated by the creative design.
  • Strategically position and securely rig fog machines and distribution hosing, carefully considering air circulation, performer safety zones, and audience sightlines.
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with cast, crew, and stage management regarding the timing, placement, and nature of effects to ensure performer safety and comfort.
  • Stay informed about emerging atmospheric technologies, innovative techniques, and updated safety protocols within the live entertainment and special effects industry.
  • Operate other related special effects equipment as required by the production, which may include snow machines, bubble machines, confetti cannons, or cryo-jets.
  • Participate in all relevant production meetings, technical rehearsals, and safety briefings to ensure seamless integration of atmospheric effects with lighting, sound, and automation.
  • Implement and monitor ventilation strategies in coordination with the venue to maintain safe air quality for all performers, crew members, and the audience.
