Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Skillfully set up, adjust, and operate various folding machines (e.g., MBO, Stahl, Baumfolder) to produce finished products according to customer specifications.
- Thoroughly read and interpret job tickets and work orders to understand all project requirements, including paper size, weight, fold type, and quantity.
- Conduct continuous, rigorous quality control checks throughout each production run to ensure folding accuracy, consistency, and adherence to the highest quality standards.
- Perform complex and right-angle folding operations, including gate folds, accordion folds, letter folds, and other custom configurations.
- Proactively troubleshoot and resolve machine malfunctions, such as paper jams, misfeeds, and gluing issues, to minimize downtime and maintain production schedules.
- Execute routine and preventative maintenance on folding equipment, including cleaning, oiling, and lubricating moving parts to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Constantly monitor machine operations at various speeds to detect potential issues before they impact quality or productivity.
- Make precise, fine-tune adjustments to rollers, guides, scoring wheels, and suction feeders during runs to compensate for variations in paper stock and maintain consistent quality.
- Load raw paper stock onto machine feeders and efficiently offload, stack, and box finished, folded materials for the next stage of production or shipping.
- Maintain meticulous and accurate production logs, documenting job progress, material usage, spoilage counts, and operational hours for reporting and inventory purposes.
- Collaborate effectively with pressroom operators, cutters, and other bindery team members to ensure a seamless and efficient workflow from start to finish.
- Verify that all job components match the specifications on the job ticket before beginning a run, preventing costly errors.
- Perform final visual inspections on finished products, identifying and removing any pieces with tears, smudges, dog-ears, or other imperfections.
- Expertly manage various paper stocks, understanding how different weights, coatings, and finishes affect machine setup and performance.
- Set up and operate peripheral attachments, such as scoring, perforating, and gluing systems, integrated with the folding machine.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and OSHA guidelines, maintaining a clean, safe, and organized workspace at all times.
- Accurately package, jog, and label finished jobs, ensuring they are prepared for delivery or transfer to other departments.
- Communicate clearly with shift supervisors regarding production status, equipment issues, supply levels, and any challenges encountered during a job run.
- Adjust machine speed strategically to find the optimal balance between high productivity and exceptional quality output.
- Assist in training new or junior operators on machine setup, safety procedures, and quality control best practices.
- Manage the inventory of consumable supplies for the folding area, such as glue, banding, and boxes, and report when reordering is necessary.
